What Juneau About That? Alaska oil-tax bribery scandal widens, may include members of Congress |

Posted at 2:42 PM on 12 Nov 2007 For the last year or so, ugly truths about Alaskan politics have been oozing into the limelight as state and federal officials unravel a scandal involving cash bribes, an oil tax, bowling scores, and sleeping pills. Yes, you heard us right: an oil tax! The founder of an oil-field services company pled guilty this spring to bribery and conspiracy; he's drug several stat ...

Ted Stevens, climatologist Alaskan senator invents new theory of global warming |

Ted Stevens, the Republican senator whose vacation home was recently raided by the FBI, and who made over $800,000 from a shady real estate deal last year, has come up with a brand-new theory of global warming. He told a NBC reporter in Alaska: We're at the end of a long, long term of warming, 700 to 900 years of increased temperature, a very slow increase. We think we're close to the end of that. If we're close to the end of that, that means that we'll s ...

I really don't think we have time to waste on safety valves. That said, the new bill by Senators Jeff Bingaman (D-NM) and Arlen Specter (R-PA) is worth understanding because it is garnering a lot of support -- at a cost: But to secure labor and corporate support, the measure also places a limit on the price industry would have to pay for such permits. And to win the endorsement of Alaska's two Republican senators, the bill contains billions of dollars in new mon ...

A while back, I noted with some bafflement that Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) of all people was proposing a boost in CAFE standards. Now his fellow Senator is hopping on board the green train too: [Alaska Sen. Lisa] Murkowski on Tuesday endorsed Stevens' bill and introduced a companion measure to create tax credits for alternative energy sources and expand and extend those offered on hybrid vehicles. Murkowski's bill also would launch a study for requiring more ef ...

Among the barrage of energy-related bills already unleashed by the 110th Congress, one of the most progressive comes not from the newly empowered Democrats, but from Republican Sen. Ted Stevens of Alaska, a zealous proponent of drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Just as peculiar, one of the bills that most rankles environmentalists comes from Democratic ...

Holy snot! Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens (yes, that Ted Stevens) is sponsoring a bill to increase CAFE standards -- the very standards he voted to eliminate in 2002. This is Stevens we're talking about, so an ulterior motive is a mathematical certainty. I suspect he's making deals or at least trolling for good will to build support for drilling in the Arctic Refuge. But still. These are strange, strange days we live in. (via The Plank)

The FBI raided the offices of six Alaskan legislators last week, looking for evidence of illegal dealings with the oil firm VECO. The investigation has prompted beneficiaries further south to quickly stash evidence of their own shady dealings, including Washington State Republican Senate candidate Mike McGavick.McGavick returned $14,000 in donations from VECO executives the day following the raid, his campaign announced Tuesday. At the press conference, Stevens said that interpretation was wrong. "I'm here, I'm goi ...

Sen. The latest attempt involved attaching drilling to the defense appropriations bill, in effect holding military funding hostage in the middle of an armed conflict. We have perhaps become num ...
