Gristmill |
| The following post is by Earl Killian, guest blogger at Climate Progress. ----- The California Energy Commission is considering a proposal by PG&E to require televisions sold in the state to meet a minimum efficiency standard. Why is a utility proposing its customers by more efficient appliances? Because California allows utilities to earn a return on investment from negawatts. PG&E's proposal begins by plotting the power consumption (in Watts) of e ... |

| Posted at 10:38 AM on 22 Jul 2008 A British documentary that declared climate change to be a willful and conspiratorial hoax broke impartiality rules and misrepresented the views of some participants, British broadcasting regulator Ofcom said Monday. The not-so-subtly named The Great Global Warming Swindle, which aired on Britain's Channel 4 in March 2007, said at one point in its narration, "Everywher ... |

In partnership with Chevy and NRDC, MLB incorporated a number of 'green' initiatives into tonight's game: Athletes will be transported to and from Yankee Stadium in FlexFuel Chevy Silverados, post-consumer recycled waste content and bio-based materials will be included in paper products, and NRDC green teams will roam the stands of Yankee Stadium encour ... |

NF3 panic unjustified, not as bad as Drudge report says Plasma TVs and solar cells not so bad after all |
Gar Lipow |
15 Jul 2008 |
Gristmill |
| A recent Grist article shared a bit in some of the panic about NF3 and plasma TVs. If all the NF3 manufactured were released, it warns, it would have a warming effect equivalent to that of Austria. It turns out that is mighty big 'if,' one that Eli Rabett manages to blast into smithereens. To begin with, most uses of NF3 are consumptive -- etching and so on -- whereby NF3 becomes something much less greenhouse intensive. The vast majority of NF3 produced is destroy ... |

| "Vast Wasteland" a Whole New Meaning Chemical in flat-screen TVs is worsening climate change Posted at 2:27 PM on 04 Jul 2008 If you didn't feel guilty about your TV habits already, here's a new reason: a chemical used in making flat-screen televisions has been found to be a potent greenhouse gas, 17,000 times stronger than carbon dioxide. In a study published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, atmospheric chemist Michael Prather called nitrogen trifluoride, or NF3, & ... |

Moyers talks to Boxer

| Wow, you kinda forget what good TV journalism looks like until you watch Bill Moyers. He makes the cable babblers look like children. Don't miss Moyers interviewing Barbara Boxer on the flame-out of the Climate Security Act. She's really quite good on this, but in the end, as much as I kind of regret saying it, I'm just not sure she has the centrist credibility to sell this program. It's not fair, but optics are optics, and D.C. is a shallow, silly place. |

Yes, Tommy and Leona's on-stage antics were #1 on the list -- and better yet, Grist's Norwegian Wood head and subhead were woven into the story's graphics. Score! |

A not-so-rosy review of Planet Green Critic bashes new eco-tainment network |

| I imagine some folks over at Planet Green are seeing red right about now. You would be too if someone suggested your new eco-cable network 'embarrasses the Earth.' It's the first really negative review of Planet Green I've seen, and it was penned by Slate television critic Troy Patterson. The entire review can pretty much be summed up with this: 'Planet Green turns the entire Earth into a lifestyle accessory, often to uniquely awful effect.'Patterson goes on to ... |
