| Sacks Education San Francisco approves first-in-nation ban on plastic bags San Francisco is the first U.S. city to pass a ban on non-recyclable plastic bags at major supermarkets and drugstores. Once it's signed into law, the stores will have six months to a year to sack the sacks, switching to compostable, recyclable ones made from corn or potato starch -- or reverting to recyclable paper. A coalition of groups in the San Francisco Bay Area is undertaking a push against globalization and the labor and environmental offenses it incurs. | Umbra offered up a number of clever gift ideas for kids in her latest column, focusing particularly on experiences rather than things. But if you still want to do some thing-giving for those wee ones, you might first want to check out 'What's Toxic In Toyland,' an article by Margot Roosevelt in Time. San Francisco has just banned some plastic toys aimed at kids under three. The prime targets -- bisphenol A and phthalates -- have been found in everything from rubber duckie ... |

Grist reader party in San Francisco It kicked ass |
David Roberts |
13 Nov 2006 |
Gristmill |
| The Grist reader party in San Francisco on Friday was a smashing success. Over 300 eco-glitterati packed into the art gallery, and they were resplendent: young, urbane, and utterly destructive to every caricature that's ever attached to the word "environmentalist." A reporter who was there researching a story on Grist, speaking afterwards, was moved to exclaim: "I can't believe how hot everybody was!" Indeed. (Many more pictures are available ... |

San Fran Green Festival A report |
David Roberts |
10 Nov 2006 |
Gristmill |
| I'm here in San Francisco at the Green Festival -- billed as the world's largest green expo. The San Fran convention center is packed to the rafters with booths, booths, booths. It is somewhat verboten to say so these days, but the predominant vibe is still distinctly hippie. (As I wrote that, a small troop of people wandered by playing drums and tooting on flutes.) Dreadlocks abound. Tofu products are ubiquitous. The word "spirit" is deployed with alarming ... |

| I'm going to be down in San Francisco tomorrow and Friday, so blogging (from me, anyway) will be light-to-nonexistent. Hey, have you heard we're having a reader party in San Fran on Friday night? I'm gonna be there, throwin' down, or rockin', or wildin' out, or whatever it is the kids do these days when they drink to excess. I hope some of you regular Gristmill readers are able to make it -- I'd love to put faces with names. Attendance is looking to be in the multip ... |

| Circuit Breaker Senators clash over proposal to split green-friendly 9th Circuit Court For years, Republicans have loathed the San Francisco-based U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, the nation's largest federal appeals court and most left-leaning. Its long record of upholding environmental laws is but one of its sins in the eyes of conservatives. Now, for the umpteenth time, they're trying ... |

| I love living in San Francisco, where not only do we have a City Department of the Environment, but it's teamed up with the Sierra Club on an environmental art/advocacy project that is all at once simple, creative, thought-provoking, cheap, and replicable. Today, they launched FutureSeaLevel.org to bring the climate crisis home. It's an ingeniously simple idea: Participants tape up public spaces with a line of blue tape that marks the new sea level after unchecked glo ... |

| What's Up, Dock? San Francisco aims to provide plug-in power to docked cruise ships As San Francisco completes a new cruise-ship terminal, it plans also to build a facility to provide electric power to docked ships. Shoreside power -- in effect, extension cords that plug idling ships into hydro- and solar-generated electricity -- could reduce harmful emissions from the ships by up to 80 percent, said San Fra ... |

See for yourself:I'm showing San Francisco above because it's closest to my heart, but I think the Chicago map is coolest. The simple explanation for the pattern is that people who live in denser neighborhoods -- places where stores, services, and j ... |

And you would also think that transit authorities would be thrilled to hear that their maps are now available to millions of iPod users. There, you'd be wrong. From Wired we learn that William Bright, creator of IPodSubwayMaps.com, was asked to remove maps of the New York City ... |

| San Francisco, or as I like to call it, number one, is already sinking its teeth into the Accords. City officials must have gotten an early copy, or taken a look at the wiki used to draft them before they were finalized, since the SF Examiner article reporting that officials will consider making green purchasing a reality for the city is dated May 30, before the Accords were finalized. Nevertheless, SF will be well on their way to knocking out Accord number five with this ... |
