Which is more painful, Giuliani's line that we can deal with global warming through energy independence or Romney's line that it's not 'American warming' but 'global warming'? (A question for the Mittster: if, as you say, tackling this problem is going to enrich our economy, our environment, and our national security, why on earth would we wait for China to act? Seems like we'd want to get right on that, no?) (Thanks LL!)

You might recall that a while back there was talk of a(nother) presidential forum on climate and energy, to be convened by Al Gore and Arnold Schwarzenegger in New Hampshire, involving all the candidates from both parties. Surely given the location, the subject, and the star power, no candidate could say no, right? Well, turns out it's not happening. Why? Because of the Republicans, only McCain agreed to attend. Giuliani didn't even return their calls. In other news ...

In a revealing interview on Meet the Press today, GOP Presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani said he does not support the mandated increase to 35-mpg that both the House and Senate -- and I believe even the president -- support. To quote Rudy: "That isn't the way I think it should be done." What is his alternative strategy? Politically, as readers know, only one other alternative strategy exists: "technology, technology, technology, blah, blah, b ...

| In his typically succinct way, Atrios captures something essential about energy policy, modern-day conservatism, and Rudy Giuliani: Jim Cramer is interviewing Rudy. I don't have the sound on, but the captions are funny. First one. | Updated 11 Dec 2007 Rudy Giuliani. Republican presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani, who served as mayor of New York City from 1994 to 2001, talks up energy independence as a critical component of national security. | A frequently overlooked element of the energy/climate debate -- most debates about big issues, really -- is opportunity cost. That is to say, there's a limited stock of national attention and money, and if you argue that a large portion should to go one set of issues, you are implicitly arguing that proportionately less should go to other issues. That, at least, is my tenuous hook for pointing out that Rudy Giuliani's recent foreign policy manifesto -- which argues fo ... |

There's a series of very strange political videos out recently on YouTube. They parody Republicans, but purport to be campaign ads for Rudy Giuliani. Nobody knows who's making them, or why. So mysterious! This one's mildly amusing on global warming and oil: (h/t: reader KW)

Instant correction: Those of you who perused Muckraker early this morning or over the weekend may have read that New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R) was prepared to sign a major letter from mayors and other local officials calling for the federal government to do more to combat global warming. Not so keen to be green? Well, forget it. After appearing ready to sign on the dotted line, thanks to some arm twisting from Chicago Mayor Ri ...
