He's no zero Republicans for Environmental Protection explains McCain ranking (or lack thereof) |
Kate Sheppard |
30 May 2008 |
Gristmill |
| Republicans for Environmental Protection gave John McCain a 'no score' on its just-released 2007 congressional scorecard, as David pointed out earlier. McCain missed all 14 of the votes on which REP scored senators, but the group opted not to give him a zero. Grist called David Jenkins, government affairs director for REP, to find out why. 'We thought the best way to treat this was to not score presidential candidate absences as a negative,' said Jenkins. 'It ... |

A free pass Republicans for Environmental Protection lets McCain off the hook for missing important votes |
David Roberts |
29 May 2008 |
Gristmill |
| Yesterday, Republicans for Environmental Protection issued their annual scorecard for 2007. Party standard bearer Sen. John McCain missed every vote they scored. (For more on that, see here.) So what did REP do? Give him a score of zero? No, they just didn't score him at all. Nice to see calculated political cowardice rewarded. With a bang-up start like this, I'm sure we'll see REP holding McCain's feet to the fire throughout the campaign! |

Nuclear options John McCain talks nuclear security, promises to promote 'civilian' nukes |
Kate Sheppard |
27 May 2008 |
Gristmill |
| John McCain gave a speech on nuclear security this morning at the University of Denver, and given his abiding love of nuclear power as the solution to climate change, that came up too. Where there's 'civilian' nuclear energy, there's the possibility for nuclear weapons -- and if he's promoting the former, that leads to plenty of questions about how to prevent the latter. And of course, all that spent nuclear fuel has to go somewhere. His remarks: As we improve the ... |

GOP vs. John McCain? Climate bill fight likely to divide Republicans |
Kate Sheppard |
27 May 2008 |
Gristmill |
| Politico reports on the divide between John McCain and other Republicans on climate change: By contrast, the debate on a bipartisan climate change bill sponsored by Sens. Joseph I. Lieberman (I-Conn.) and John Warner (R-Va.) offers McCain a chance to stake out a position different from the president's and see if his party will follow. The catch is that many Republicans are uncomfortable with McCain's talk of a cap-and-trade program for reducing carbon emissions. ... |

The 'maverick' speaks on agriculture McCain thunders against ag subsidies, vows fealty to trade agenda |

19 May 2008 |
Gristmill |
| Speaking before the National Restaurant Association on Monday, John McCain delivered a stirring rant against agriculture subsidies and the latest farm bill (text here.) No doubt burnishing his "maverick" image among editorial writers, the senator lambasted the bill as a giveaway of "billions of dollars in subsidies to some of the biggest and richest agribusiness corporations in America -- many of which are heavy political contributors to members in bot ... |

Carly Fiorina on McCain RNC 'Victory Chair' talks about McCain's climate agenda |
Kate Sheppard |
17 May 2008 |
Gristmill |
| Grist recently caught a few minutes with Carly Fiorina, the 'Victory Chair' of the Republican National Committee. (Quite the title, eh? Apparently it means she's 'the primary advocate for John McCain and the Republican Party' at the RNC.) Fiorina, the former CEO of Hewlett-Packard and a former executive at both AT&T and Lucent Technologies, is charged with traveling the country to promote McCain's plans for economic growth and job creation. Grist asked her how ... |

Subsidize my love Grist asks McCain about contradictory messages on nuclear subsidies |
Kate Sheppard |
15 May 2008 |

| John McCain hosted a call-in with bloggers today following his address in Columbus, Ohio, in which he outlined his priorities for a first term in office. Grist got in a couple of questions: You mentioned climate and energy in your speech today, that they would be among your top priorities, and that has also been the focus of several speeches this week. You say in general that you're against subsidies, even for renewable energy, but you said today that you'd like to ... |

15 May 2008 |
Gristmill |
| John McCain is in Ohio today, where he gave a speech this morning about what he plans to accomplish by 2013. Progress on climate and energy is part of his vision for a better world at the end of his first term: The United States is well on the way to independence from foreign sources of oil -- progress that has not only begun to alleviate the environmental threat posed from climate change, but has greatly improved our security as well. | In honor of John McCain's eco-week, both the McCain campaign and the Republican National Committee have launched sites where folks can make personal pledges to protect the planet. The McCain campaign has also put out a line of 'eco-friendly' swag -- shirts, hats, tote bags, etc. Meanwhile, McCain adviser Kevin Hassett, who is also the director of economic-policy studies at the American Enterprise Institute, argues in an op-ed that polar bears shouldn't be listed as ... |

Nukes to me More on the nuclear portion of McCain's big climate speech |
Kate Sheppard |
13 May 2008 |
Gristmill |
| What's the deal with John McCain's nuclear love affair? It's a question on many people's minds after the candidate's big climate speech yesterday. While McCain has argued repeatedly that he's opposed to subsidies for the nuclear industry, he stresses the need to support the nuclear industry and fund nuclear R&D. The most recent incarnation of his Climate Stewardship Act, introduced in January 2007, would authorize more than $3.7 billion in federal subsidies fo ... |

McCain's offsets What would the use of carbon offsets mean for McCain's climate policy? |
David Roberts |
13 May 2008 |
Gristmill |
| To me the most striking element of McCain's just-released carbon cap-and-trade plan is that it would, at least at the outset, allow regulated entities to achieve 100 percent of their emission reductions through the purchase of domestic or international offsets. By way of comparison, the Lieberman-Warner climate bill headed for the floor of the Senate caps the contribution of offsets at 15 percent, and requires that all the offsets be from domestic projects. This is a ... |

Blustery irony Anti-wind McCain delivers climate remarks at foreign wind company |

| Conservative presidential candidate Sen. John McCain chose a clever but ultimately hypocritical location for his big climate speech. I hope the media aren't fooled by his ironic choice of wind turbine company Vestas as the backdrop, but I have little doubt they will run enticing photos and videos of wind turbines. McCain, however, does not deserve to be linked to such images. I would title the speech 'Not the man for the job' (see 'No climate for old men'). Let's be ... |
