Posted at 10:10 AM on 07 Mar 2008 The captain of the radical anti-whaling Sea Shepherd Conservation Society says he was shot in a clash with Japanese whalers on Friday. Paul Watson says he found a bullet in his Kevlar vest; Japan's fisheries agency disputed the accusation, saying those onboard the whaling ship retaliated with non-lethal flash grenades after activists threw stink bombs of eye-stinging butyric aci ...

Posted at 10:34 AM on 27 Nov 2007 We're sure you have plenty of fodder for eco-nightmares, but let us add another: killer jellyfish. Last week, a horde of jellies covering an area of 10 square miles (!) attacked Northern Ireland's only salmon farm, killing some 100,000 fish. The mauve stinger jellyfish were well north of their favored Mediterranean habitat, thanks to warmer-than-normal water. Another type, ...

The elusive and endangered yamaneko. Photo: Makoto Yokotsuka. The Iriomote cat is a survivor. For centuries, it employed the surest survival technique of all -- avoiding humans -- before being scientifically described for the first time in 1967 by Dr. Yoshimori Imaizumi of Tokyo's National Science Museum. Its home, Iriomote Island, is one of the southernmost points in Japan. Located more than 1,200 miles ...
