| Bonnaroo 2006. Photo: Sarah van Schagen. I'm sitting in the middle of a field in rural Tennessee, and it feels like it's got to be 110 degrees out. Somehow I've forgotten about my sweat-lined brow and muddy shoes; instead, I'm focused on listening to Bonnaroo's head press guy, Ken Weinstein of Big Hassle Media, talk about the music festival's ongoing efforts to put on a greener ... |

Bonnaroo: Wishin' and hopin' It ain't enough to make a tour green |
Sarah van Schagen |
19 Jun 2007 |
Gristmill |
| Bonnaroo isn't the easiest place to transcribe interviews, what with the 24-hour music for four days straight. So I'll be continuing to post new material from my time at the festival for the next couple days. And I've also got some longer interviews planned for the future. Get psyched!Next up, my chat Sunday with Colin Meloy of the Decemberists, a "hyperliterate prog-rock" band (as described by Stephen Colbert) hailing from Portland, Ore. Colin, you joke ... |

Bonnaroo: Attention vegan girls! Comedian Dave Attell wants your number |
Sarah van Schagen |
18 Jun 2007 |
Gristmill |
| Comedian Dave Attell wants your number. No, really! The star of Comedy Central's Insomniac was at Bonnaroo this year working the air-conditioned comic tent. At a press conference Sunday afternoon, Attell said he's really here for the hippie girls, and that he likes a vegan girl who can keep him up all night talking about recycling. I laughed as he said it, but doubted whether it were true -- so I decided to chat with him afterward and find out for sure.I liked y ... |

Gettin' dirty at Bonnaroo Did someone call for a smog machine? |
Sarah van Schagen |
18 Jun 2007 |
Gristmill |
| No, that's not smog. It's all the dry, dusty dirt drifting everywhere I go here at Bonnaroo. It's in my hair, covering my shoes, and stuck to every drop of sweat on my body. That I can deal with ...The problem is that it's also in my eyes, my nose, my lungs. I came here perfectly healthy, and I'll be going home with itchy eyes, a stuffed up nose, a dry throat, congested lungs, and a not-so-sexy cough. Roo-goers are holding kerchiefs, t-shirts, towels -- anyt ... |

Bonnaroo: The Cold War Kids heat things up At a press-only Bonnaroo show |
Sarah van Schagen |
17 Jun 2007 |
Gristmill |
| Caught a press-only acoustic performance yesterday with the Cold War Kids, Elvis Perkins, and Alec Ounsworth (dreamy!) from Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. The show was amazing; the guys played several songs from each band, ending with "Doomsday" by Elvis Perkins, which has amazing (and somewhat relevant) lyrics that I can't seem to find online. Bummer. But I did get a chance to chat with Nathan Willett from Cold War Kids afte ... |

| There's a lot of press here at Bonnaroo, so I don't know why I was so surprised to find out that Jon Pareles of The New York Times is here blogging the festival. I guess I just can't imagine the Gray Lady all sweaty and covered in dirt, hanging out with the hippies.Anyway, Friday he posted a short piece on Bonnaroo's greening efforts -- check it out. |

Bonnaroo: Gettin' friendly with Franti At a Bonnaroo press conference |
Sarah van Schagen |
15 Jun 2007 |
Gristmill |
| I just left the first press conference of Bonnaroo where hiphop-funk-reggae guru Michael Franti of Spearhead set the stage by explaining his routine when coming to Bonnaroo: "The first thing I always do is go over to the port-a-potty, because you can tell what stage the festival is in ..." The man speaks the truth. Asked about using the stage as a soapbox, Franti went on to speak about the community at Bonnaroo: "When you come to a festival, you'r ... |

Bonnaroo crowds (and trash) arrive Look out! |
Sarah van Schagen |
15 Jun 2007 |
Gristmill |
| The masses started arriving yesterday. Gates opened at noon, and 'Roo-goers were ready. At left is the 'before' shot -- the open grassy field (once home to cows and cow pies) that will soon be just a field of dirt covered in dirt-covered people and dirt-covered trash. Unless Clean Vibes has something to do with it, that is. They're the expert trash-picker-uppers I mentioned last year. And if what I saw yesterday is any indication, they're back in full force ... |

| I'm writing this post while sitting at the Grist booth at Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival in Manchester, Tenn. If you're here, come say hi -- and explain why you're reading Gristmill instead of listening to some of the amazing music out here. It seems like it was just a year ago that I was out here reporting on all the ways Bonnaroo is making efforts to go green. And wondering how I would survive four nights in a tent ... let alone set it up. I guess I just c ... |

| After reuniting onstage Sunday at the Grammy Awards, The Police have announced a world tour that will begin May 28 in Vancouver and continue across North America, Europe, South America, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand. The band has confirmed the first 14 dates, including two performances at Madison Square Garden and a headlining show at the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival in June. | If you've been reading Gristmill -- as I'm sure you all have! -- you'll know that I just returned from a trip to cover the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival in Manchester, Tenn. (And what a long, strange triperoo, it was!) One of the many things I didn't get to mention in my story is that I met these folks while I was there. I happened to be hanging around the straw-baled green pod when I looked out into the sea of tents and port-o-potties and noticed a big, gre ... |

| Find out more about how Bonnaroo is going green. It was early afternoon on a Friday when I got the call. I had been wrangling commas and scanning The Superficial the news all morning when Grist kahuna maxima Chip Giller asked me if I would go to the Bonnaroo Arts & Music Festival in Tennessee to cover its efforts to eco-ize. This was exactly the kind of break I'd been waiting for. Giller wanted me -- me! -- to travel across the country and file a real story. ... |

C'est Bonn Legendary music fest Bonnaroo urges fans to go green |

| Two's company, 80,000's a crowd. Photos: Sarah van Schagen. For most of the year, this 700-acre farm in Manchester, Tenn., provides open, grassy pasture for a herd of cows. But for a short time each summer, the idyllic setting is taken over by a different kind of herd: the tens of thousands of fans who descend for the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival. The now-legendary event features long-haired ... |

| Well, folks, my time here at Bonnaroo is coming to a close. Today, I got the chance to chat with head trash-picker-upper Anna of Clean Vibes, Atlanta-based band the Codetalkers, and a number of eco-booth staffers and everyman 'Roo goers. I also listened in as Bonnie Raitt chatted with Marc Ross of Rock the Earth about her work on social issues. She truly believes in using her music to inspire change -- and hopefully her hour-long interview on the Solar Stage will i ... |

Bonnaroo: Lewis Black & Lyrics Born

Gristmill |
| More scoop from 'Roo: Funny man Lewis Black, laughin' it up at 'Roo's comedy tent, says he's on tour so much that he isn't in one place long enough to be harming any environment. Ha ha. But seriously, he's looking into biodiesel for his tour bus. My interview with Lyrics Born went very well. Turns out he's very much into raising awareness about eco-issues. And he's psyched about 'Roo's eco-efforts because, he says, he knows how trashed a festival can get. |

Yay for showers in my camp area. Boo for not finding them 'til I was dressed and sunscreened! On tap today: interviews with Lyrics Born and a 'Roo green guy. Plus my first press conference! |

| By the time you read this, I'll be at a comfortable cruising altitude -- and spewing CO2 into the atmosphere at an alarming rate. (Calm down ... I've offset the flight. Thanks, Native Energy!) I'm on my way to the Bonnaroo music festival in Manchester, Tenn., and not for the reasons you think. The four-day, multi-stage festival is cleaning up its act -- like a number of music festivals this year -- and making a real effort to be as green as possible ... no, not tha ... |
