| Update: Bill Richardson dropped out of the presidential race on Jan. 10, 2008. Bill Richardson. Bill Richardson has been an advocate for clean energy and action against climate change during his tenure as governor of New Mexico from 2003 to the present, and now, as a Democratic presidential candidate, he's pushing perhaps the biggest and most far-reaching energy and climate plan of the campaign. | The saying goes that during one of his bids for the White House, a woman told Adlai Stevenson 'Not to worry, Senator, all thinking people are with you,' to which he replied: 'But I need a majority!' Not only was Stevenson smart and quick-witted enough to make that story plausible, it suggests that the smartest candidates have always had to do a little bit of hiding their lights under a bushel. But now we live in what Vonnegut called the ultimate scary reality show: C-Stude ... |

| Over at Politico, Glenn Hurowitz argues that at key moments, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama have sold out the public interest in favor of polluting industries in their states. He says they could stand to learn something from Bill Richardson and John Edwards, whose energy/climate plans are ambitious and powerful. I suspect that if you look closely enough at Richardson's and Edwards' records, you could find some evidence that they're not above parochialism either, but ... |

Bill Richardson's climate and energy plan The boldest plan on the table |
David Roberts |
17 May 2007 |

| As of today, Bill Richardson has become the boldest, most visionary Democratic presidential candidate on climate and energy policy. (John Edwards is a close second.) No politician from either party has put forward a plan that comes closer to being a realistic response to the energy shortages and climate chaos heading our way. Here's the heart of Richardson's speech today: We need a man-on-the-moon program to end this addiction, this hemorrhage. But we nee ... |

| New Mexico governor and Democratic presidential candidate Bill Richardson gave a big speech today in which he introduced what sounds like an extremely ambitious climate and energy plan. The speech isn't online yet, and the plan isn't on his site yet, so all I have to go on is reactions from people who have seen it. [Update [2007-5-17 11:48:0 by David Roberts]: No sooner do I post this than I find the speech online, along with a helpful summary of the plan. More later.] ... |

| A few more important results from gubernatorial races: In Colorado, Rep. Bob Beauprez (R) lost the governor's race to Bill Ritter (D), whose support of new energy sources and preserving public lands put him among the candidates supported by big enviro groups. Beauprez had a dismal environmental record. Over in Maryland, green Baltimore mayor Martin O'Malley (D) claimed a win over incumbent Robert Ehrlich (R). News in the Nevada race was a bit more grim -- Jim Gi ... |

| Muck's got the complete scoop here and here, but here's a quick rundown on governors' races with a green tinge: California -- Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) v. Phil Angelides (D) Voters get to decide this year whether they want to keep Arnie in office or move forward with Angelides, the state treasurer and this year's Democratic candidate. The big enviro groups are standing behind Angelides (and for a cheesy video demonstrating this, check here), but on the whole, voters i ... |
