Green for green Green initiatives unveiled at Clinton Global Initiative gathering |
Kate Sheppard |
25 Sep 2008 |
Gristmill |
| The purpose of the Clinton Global Initiative is to bring together some of the folks working on specific global challenges, people who can support their good ideas, and those who would benefit from the solutions. These people get together, discuss, collaborate, and in some cases announce major initiatives that have come out of these partnerships. With 'Energy & Climate' as one of the four focuses of this year's gathering, there have been a number of public and pri ... |

I'm just a Bill Former President Clinton talks about the financial crisis and clean energy on 'The Daily Show' |

Gristmill |
| Former President Bill Clinton was on The Daily Show last night talking about his Clinton Global Initiative, the financial crisis, and alternative energy -- and how the nation's financial situation might have played out differently if we'd dealt intelligently with energy issues years ago. Laws and effect Bill Clinton says smart energy policy could have avoided the financial meltdown |
David Roberts |
24 Sep 2008 |

| Henry Farrell has an interesting account of a discussion session Bill Clinton held with a group of bloggers. This jumped out: Clinton's basic argument was that the [financial] crisis was one of an overleveraged Wall Street system which emphasized the volume of transactions, and in which people were rewarded for chasing risky deals, and in which there were too few good investment opportunities. Money ended up being funneled into real estate that shouldn't have been. ... |

Over the shark and way past the fridge Clinton Global Initiative jumps the shark, invites McCain to keynote on energy solutions |

| I understand that CGI will also have Senator Inhofe keynote on climate science, Karl Rove on ethics, and President Bush on openness in government. Seriously -- or ridiculously, take your pick -- the CGI has announced: Senator John McCain will deliver the opening remarks live at the 'Integrated Solutions: water, food and energy' plenary session. Would this be the John McCain who voted with Inhofe (R-Big Oil) and against clean energy and clean water a staggering 42 ... |

| Posted at 10:07 PM on 27 Aug 2008 In his convention speech on Wednesday night, Democratic vice presidential candidate Joe Biden said an Obama administration will make "alternative energy a national priority ... creating 5 million new jobs, and finally breaking us from the grip of foreign oil." Biden accused John McCain of being wrong on everything "from Amtrak to veterans," and said, " ... |

| Bill Clinton took the stage this evening to thunderous applause and chants of 'Bill, Bill, Bill.' 'I'm here, first, to support Barack Obama,' he began. 'And I'm here to warm up the crowd for Joe Biden.' He then touched on the tough battle between his wife, Hillary Clinton, and Obama: 'That campaign created so much heat, it increased global warming.' But he then moved to a more conciliatory tone. 'Barack Obama is ready to be president of the United States,' he sai ... |

DNC: Clinton warming
|
David Roberts |
27 Aug 2008 |
Gristmill |
| Bill Clinton on the primary: 'That campaign created so much heat, it increased global warming.' UPDATE: Clinton knocked it out of the park -- his speech was just as good, in its way, as Hillary's. Full-throated support for Obama, his characteristic historical context-setting, and as a bonus, several mentions of global warming as one of the signal international challenges facing the next president. |

National Clean Energy Summit: Clinton miscellanea
|
David Roberts |
19 Aug 2008 |

| A few more bits from Clinton's Q&A were of interest. First, he was asked how he would respond to ordinary people's pocketbook concerns on energy, and that's when he really shined. (Responding to average folk was always Clinton's strength.) He said that of course some of these reforms will raise the unit cost of energy -- any time you invest in a new area you raise the cost of doing things the old way. The question is whether the benefits outweigh the costs. And s ... |

National Clean Energy Summit: Wonk-in-chief Bill Clinton gets into the weeds of energy policy |
David Roberts |

Gristmill |
| Photo: Brent Danley On Monday, Bill Clinton gave the opening remarks at the National Clean Energy Summit, speaking for almost an hour and taking questions for another 30 minutes. The energy issue is hot politics these days, but those hoping to witness some of the '90s-vintage Clinton political jujitsu left disappointed. Instead they were treated to -- or, depending on their tolerance for wonkery, forced to endure -- an extended disquisition on the finer poi ... |

| Commitments to start social-change initiatives and spirited discussions of global issues -- these aren't typical results of 700 college students heading to New Orleans during spring break season. But last weekend, students from a diverse group of colleges, several dozen university presidents, and prominent social change agents -- not to mention Bill Clinton -- spent a day and a half on Tulane University's campus for Clinton Global Initiative University (with a cameo ... |

| Andy Revkin has a Dot Earth post today that reflects on Jake Tapper's hackery and, in my humble opinion, lets Tapper off way too easily. Look at this: For his part, Mr. Tapper posted a series of updates through Thursday clarifying his intent, saying he found Mr. Clinton's speech confusing and was posing questions more than offering criticisms. And his main point, he told me over the phone late last night, was to examine whether Mr. Clinton was portraying efforts ... |

| From Wednesday's New York Times: Late on Sept. 6, 2005, a private plane carrying the Canadian mining financier Frank Giustra touched down in Almaty, a ruggedly picturesque city in southeast Kazakhstan. Several hundred miles to the west a fortune awaited: highly coveted deposits of uranium that could fuel nuclear reactors around the world. And Mr. Giustra was in hot pursuit of an exclusive deal to tap them. Unlike more established competitors, Mr. Giustra wa ... |

| My first impression of Clinton was that he'd just woken up, or that he was under the weather. He had a little bedhead, his voice was a bit croaky, and he was speaking slowly. This definitely wasn't the virtuoso Clinton of the 1998 SOTU. The fireworks were mostly muted, though there were a few flashes here and there. Still, on his worst day Clinton is never less than engrossing. (photo: U.S. Mayors Conference) He began by laying out the main three challenges of the ... |

| Bill Clinton gave the keynote address at the conference. That means I got to see Gore and Clinton within a few hours of one another, and wow, what an interesting contrast. Isaiah Berlin famously divided thinkers into two categories, hedgehogs and foxes. The fox knows many things; the hedgehog knows a lot about one thing. Bill Clinton is perhaps the foxiest fox of our time, and Gore perhaps the hedgehoggiest hedgehog. Gore takes one thing -- climate change -- and meth ... |

| Bill Clinton just gave a short speech and took a few questions from reporters. Some highlights: When they were in office, Bill Clinton and Al Gore wanted to create a global carbon market. At the time, Europe thought the idea undesirable and unfeasible and didn't offer any support. The effort failed. Now, years down the line, the world is a different place and the idea has much more purchase. Clinton, when asked for his thoughts on this, managed to turn all of his ... |

| Bill Clinton introduced the morning plenary today by, once again, honoring the companies and people who've committed to the Clinton Global Initiative to take steps to increase energy efficiency and decrease greenhouse-gas emissions. That statistic is based on this study by the McKinsey Inst ... |

| The William J. Clinton foundation has arranged billions in financing to help a coalition of sixteen cities cut urban emissions by applying a range of energy efficiency measures to aging buildings. Efficiency measures tends to get lumped in under the heading of conservation, but they really deserve to be their own full-fledged category of solutions to global warming. If conservation is simply doing less of a polluting activity, efficiency is doing the same activity with ... |

Bush vs. Clinton on climate change Bush is working with a much stronger consensus |
Andrew Dessler |

| One argument in defense of George W. Bush's lack of action on climate change is some variation of this: 'Bill Clinton wasn't any better ... he never sent the Kyoto Protocol to the Senate.' This is true. But it also ignores one important fact. The science of climate change has improved dramatically since the mid-'90s. In its 1995 report, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) summarized our knowledge about climate change by saying ... ... the balance o ... |
