Let's talk about caps, baby Enviros cheer debate talk about climate and energy, but want more details |

| Say what you may about last night's debate, but it was anything but boring for enviros. Even if the candidates largely recycled preexisting talking points on energy and climate, the mere fact that both issues got top billing in a presidential debate was an historic first. 'What strikes me as important is that energy has risen to the top of the list in terms of issues that people are concerned about right now. It's really energy, the economy, health care, and the w ... |

Energy first Obama names energy as first administration priority |

| The candidates have put forth ambitious proposals on a number of issues, but one of the great unanswered questions of the race has been what each would prioritize in office. The first policy initiative undertaken by the new president will benefit from a sense of first-term energy and momentum. Depending on what happens in ensuing years, there could be no choice about what becomes Nos. 2 or 3. Circumstances tend to intervene. So what's that crucial first priority? T ... |

| Last night's vice presidential debate featured an important exchange on climate change. Grist is posting the video and transcript excerpt below: Moderator Gwen Ifill's question to Sarah Palin: 'Governor, I'm happy to talk to you in this next section about energy issues. Let's talk about climate change. What is true and what is false about what we have heard, read, discussed, debated about the causes of climate change?' Here's the transcript of this section of the debat ... |

'No one can be opposed to alternate energy' Debate part 1: McCain tells the truth and lies at the same time |

| Let me briefly hit the big picture on the debate. The two insta polls out, from CBS and CNN, show that McCain lost by a large margin, by 13 percent or so. That large a gap means independents in particular didn't like his performance (by 22 percent in this poll). And that is no big surprise since for independents, who fundamentally don't like partisan politics -- that's why they aren't a member of either party -- repeatedly showing contempt for one's opponent is a h ... |

'I love coal more!' 'No, I love coal more!' McCain and Obama campaigns trade jabs over who's a bigger coal supporter |

| At a campaign stop in Ohio last week, a questioner with a camera asked Democratic vice presidential candidate Joe Biden why, if wind and solar are doing well, the Obama-Biden campaign is supporting 'clean coal.' Biden gave this confusing response: We're not supporting 'clean coal.' Guess what: China's building two every week, two dirty coal plants. And it's polluting the United States, it's causing people to die ... China is gonna burn 300 years of bad coal un ... |

Putting lipstick on a rig McCain visits an oil rig, repeats call for more offshore drilling |
Kate Sheppard |

| Hurricane Dolly blew away John McCain's planned visit to an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico last month, but the senator made another go at it today. On a Chevron-operated rig 150 miles off the coast of Louisiana, McCain reiterated his call for more offshore drilling and bashed his opponent for not being enthusiastic enough about oil exploration. 'Sen. Obama opposes new drilling,' said McCain (who himself opposed new offshore drilling until this summer). 'He has said ... |

Gas impasse Obama campaign's attempts to get gas ads at the pump foiled |
Kate Sheppard |
07 Aug 2008 |
Gristmill |
| Barack Obama's campaign wanted to bring the energy ad wars directly to the pump, but their attempts have been foiled. The campaign wanted to run an ad on the mini TV screens that appear on some gas pumps, pointing out that John McCain voted against higher fuel-economy standards and renewable energy, and that Obama is calling for a $1,000 energy rebate and measures to move toward energy independence. The campaign intended to roll out the ad at gas stations in Tam ... |

The energy-ad arms race Presidential candidates keep the energy ads a-comin' |

| John McCain put out this new ad yesterday, 'Broken,' in which he's portrayed as the 'original maverick' and pledges to 'battle Big Oil.' (Someone might want to pass the message along to his donors.) Barack Obama responded with this new ad yesterday, challenging the premise that McCain has been a 'maverick' on energy and other issues: ' And today McCain issued another ad repeating the celebrity allegation (this time minus Britney and Paris) and alleging tha ... |

News |
| Posted at 11:33 PM on 03 Aug 2008 Barack Obama opened the door to offshore drilling on Friday, saying, "My interest is in making sure we've got the kind of comprehensive energy policy that can bring down gas prices. If, in order to get that passed, we have to compromise in terms of a careful, well thought-out drilling strategy that was carefully circumscribed to avoid significant environmental ... |

Pump up the volume Obama responds to McCain's 'Pump' ad with call for higher mileage standards and renewables |
Kate Sheppard |
30 Jul 2008 |

| Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama released a new television ad on energy prices yesterday -- a direct response to John McCain's recent ad blaming Obama for high gas prices. 'Have you seen John McCain's TV ad?' the Obama ad asks. 'John McCain is blaming Barack Obama for gas prices. The same old politics.' 'Barack Obama thinks high gas prices deserve serious answers, and a serious plan: Crack down on oil speculators, raise mileage standards, and f ... |

Per Hirsh incentives Newsweek political journalist transcribes McCain campaign spin on energy |
David Roberts |
29 Jun 2008 |
Gristmill |
| Last October, Barack Obama laid out a detailed, ambitious, and comprehensive energy plan, and he's been talking about it ever since. A couple weeks ago, John McCain let loose a flurry of one-off energy gimmicks -- a gas tax holiday, offshore drilling, a prize for a car battery -- which he crammed together under the heading 'the Lexington Plan.' According to Washington Wise Man Michael Hirsh, in a mash note that would embarrass a crushing tween, that puts Obama on th ... |

'It is now' Obama lays out an energy vision that's economics and security first |
David Roberts |
25 Jun 2008 |
Gristmill |
| I just read the energy speech Obama gave on Tuesday in Nevada. I'd call it a TKO if I didn't sound so unconvincing using boxing metaphors. Watch what he leads with: "A green, renewable energy economy isn't some pie-in-the-sky, far-off future, it is now."This is what the campaign, correctly in my judgment, has decided people need to hear first and foremost: It's happening. People just like you, who live around here, are getting jobs doing this stuff. The Ob ... |

Presidential campaign footprints under scrutiny Confused Washington Times disses McCain and Obama on lack of carbon offsets |
Joseph Romm |
20 Feb 2008 |
Gristmill |
| In a bizarre twist, the conservative Washington Times, which would normally be critical of fuzzy environmental strategies like carbon offsets, is actually attacking the candidates for not offsetting all their campaign emissions. Opening with an absurd headline, 'Green crusades lot of talk,' the Times writes: Sens. John McCain and Barack Obama have called for strict mandatory limits to control greenhouse gases but they aren't leading by example -- each has failed ... |
