Tonight's climate-less Democratic debate: Brought to you on behalf of ABEC
|
David Roberts |

Gristmill |
| I looked through the transcript, and as far as I can tell there wasn't a single question about climate change in tonight's Democratic debate between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. This is the fourth CNN debate sponsored by coal front group Americans for Balanced Energy Choices (ABEC). Not one of the four has contained a question on climate. |

Right Said Ted Sen. Ted Kennedy endorses Obama |

28 Jan 2008 |
News |
| Posted at 2:09 PM on 28 Jan 2008 Influential Senator Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.), whose family has long been friendly with the Clintons, has nonetheless endorsed Barack Obama for president. Included among Ted's reasons: "With Barack Obama ... we will make the United States the great leader and not the great roadblock in the fateful fight against global warming." Kennedy is the brother of late President John F. Kennedy; JFK's daughter, Caroli ... |

Moving money in the economy More on climate policy in the Dem debate |

| Responding to some of the comments on Dot Earth: Obama is right that a cap-and-trade program with 100 percent auctioned permits would be the functional equivalent of a carbon tax. Yes that does, in Richardson's rather daft phrase, "take money out of the economy," in the sense that any tax does. Happily, the other half of Obama's plan is to plow the money right back into the economy, reducing the financial hit on the working class, supporting renewable energ ... |

DeSmogBlog owes Obama three apologies Obama is in no way 'George Bush Lite' |

| I am a big fan of the climate website, DeSmogBlog. So I was shocked when, the day after his unprecedented victory in Iowa, DeSmogBlog gave Barack Obama 'the inaugural 2007 SmogMaker Award for blowing smoke on global warming.' Gimme a break. How could anyone win that award any year -- let alone in its inaugural year -- when George W. Bush is still president? [Not to mention a year in which Lomborg and Inhofe continue their influential disinformation compaigns!] A ... |

Obama expecting 'serious conversation' about 'drastic steps' on climate change

| There was -- see if this sounds familiar -- almost nothing about climate or energy in the recent Democratic primary debate hosted by NPR. There was one intriguing tidbit at the end, however, triggered off this question from a listener: Mr. JAMES IRWIN: What do you think the toughest choice you have left to make is? Is it gay marriage, immigration, the war in Iraq? What haven't you made up your mind on yet? And why haven't you? Clinton, Gravel, Dodd, Edwards, an ... |

Obama energy thoughts Thoughts and reactions on Obama's bold new energy proposal |
David Roberts |

| Staying with the Monday Is Obama Day theme, here are a few thoughts on Obama's energy plan. (Full plan here; speech introducing the plan here.) Overall, I'm pleasantly surprised -- even shocked -- at its quality. It's a deft mix of good politics and strong, substantive policy. Here are what I see as the three headlines: 100% auction of cap-and-trade credits. This is a home run, a real act of standard-setting boldness (the kind that Obama always promises but ra ... |

Here it is, as prepared for delivery. ----- Remarks of Senator Barack Obama Real Leadership for a Clean Energy Future Monday, October 8th, 2007 Portsmouth, NH Two weeks ago, representatives from some of the world's largest emitters of greenhouse gases were invited to Washington by the President for a global conference on climate change. | Ah, here we go. Via the Obama campaign, I've got the fact-sheet on Obama's just-released energy plan. The PDF is here, which I've translated to HTML for your reading pleasure, below. ----- BARACK OBAMA'S PLAN TO MAKE AMERICA A GLOBAL ENERGY LEADER Our nation is confronted by two major energy challenges -- global climate change and our dependence on foreign oil -- both of which stem from our current dependence on fossil fuels for energy. Obama's energy proposal Barack Obama reveals details of energy plan in speech today |

| Barack Obama is going to unveil the details of his energy plan today. I haven't seen a copy of the speech or the plan yet, so all I have to go on is the reporting, which is just ... awful. I can't decide which is worse, the L.A. Times, Reuters, or AP. From what I can tell, there are a few potentially big pieces of news. We know already that Obama supports a cap-and-trade system that would reduce GHG emissions 80% by 2050. The marquee news, if I read the obscure pro ... |

| Updated 22 Aug 2008 Barack Obama. Photo: Conrad Erb Photography In the early months of Barack Obama's presidential campaign, enviros were skeptical of his (now heavily qualified) support for coal-to-liquids technology and unvarnished enthusiasm for ethanol, but he earned their respect with his aggressive climate and energy plan. The plan centers on a cap-and-trade system that aims for 80 percent emission r ... |
