Is the science of climate change settled? No, but we still know enough to start taking action |

| A few weeks ago, I was perusing Grist when I ran across an ad for A Convenient Fiction, a slideshow rebuttal of Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth. The author was none other than Steve Hayward, who you might remember from the AEI-$10,000-payola scandal. I had actually seen this slideshow discussed in the New York Times, and was interested to see it. In my previous communications with Hayward, he was at great pains to describe himself as someone who believed the scienc ... |

Why do we respond to bozos? Churchill, not Chamberlain |
Ken Ward |

| Why are we letting pro-fossil fuel bozos hijack the only forum that environmentalists and climate-change activists have for wrestling with the daunting task of transforming America? I posted a few practical suggestions in response to David's question, 'Should we be rebutting the skeptics?' I'm going to restate one proposal -- to adopt a Craigslist-type policy allowing Grist readers to flag inappropriate posts. Gristmill is a forum for conversation and debate between ... |

| There's lots of interesting stuff in this new Quinnipiac poll, particularly this: Former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani leads New York Sen. Hillary Clinton and other Democrats in the 2008 presidential race in three critical states - Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania, according to Quinnipiac University's Swing State Poll, three simultaneous surveys of voters in states that have been pivotal in presidential elections since 1964. But former Vice President Al Gore ... |

Gore campaign staff gathering? A fish story in the Telegraph |

| Update [2007-4-22 12:29:39 by David Roberts]: Gore's people deny it all. Figured. Friends of Al Gore have secretly started assembling a campaign team in preparation for the former American vice-president to make a fresh bid for the White House. So says Tim Shipman in the Telegraph. I suggest a high degree of skepticism. The story is built on leaks from two members of Gore's 2000 campaign team. They say they were approached by other former Gore staffers about whe ... |

Ken Green on Gore's girth Another conservative attack on motives |
David Roberts |

| I'm always excited when people on the right address climate change, even if they say stupid things. At least they're starting to think about it. On National Review, Ken Green of AEI says that Gore's carbon tax proposal is great, but the rest of his proposals are both redundant and sucky. After listing them, he says: The fact that most of this agenda would be rendered superfluous by the tax shift shows the control-fiend mentality that really drives climate activis ... |

'Electranet' slowly moving into media bloodstream Stories on smart grid starting to pop up |

| I'm late on this too, but do check out what is the first straight news story (that I've seen anyway) on Gore's "electranet" -- i.e. smart grid -- proposal. Congrats to Lisa Friedman. It's a nice piece of work, making the simple point that Gore is not talking about science fiction. The tools to make the electricity grid smarter and more resilient, and to decentralize electricity generation and storage, exist. The barriers are political. As usual, Californi ... |

Mjoes, as you may know, is the head of the Nobel Peace Prize Committee -- though he insisted he was attending as a private citizen. He said Gore's message is "very important," and took part in a one-minute standing ovation. | One of the many stories I missed today: Sen. James Inhofe, in a characteristically petty display of foot-stomping, is blocking Al Gore's efforts to have one of his Live Earth concerts on the Capitol steps. Inhofe says it's partisan. Guess it is now. Some good quotes: Noting that many political events -- including the 1990 Earth Day celebration -- have been held on the Capitol steps, [Republican Sen. Olympia] Snowe was, her spokesman said, 'genuinely disappointed' ... |

Conservatives and global warming Wherein we puzzle through the truthiness |

| I was recently made aware of the fact that the conservative National Review has a newish blog called Planet Gore. That's right: the only conservative blog I know of on global warming is primarily focused on mocking Al Gore -- who is, you'll recall, a big Fatty Fatterstein. This pungent discovery got me pondering a post on how conservative opposition to global warming advocacy seems openly and bizarrely centered on hatred of liberals and environmentalists and Al Gore r ... |

It's this: Nevertheless, when it comes to the science of global warming and its impacts, there's a very significant difference between Gore and his would-be detr ... |

| Since it came out about a year ago, An Inconvenient Truth, Al Gore's climate change documentary, seems to have pushed the issue into mainstream consciousness. Millions saw the movie itself -- but they were largely true believers anyway. Perhaps more importantly, Gore's Academy Award has earned him a wider audience among the potentially undecided: 39.9 million TV viewers tuned in for the Academy Awards themselves, plus 49 million saw Gore on Oprah. | Readers of this site may well be burnt out on talk of Gore's testimony to Congress. But if not, do check out Brad Plumer's wrap-up -- it's good. One point I think bears emphasizing. Almost all the analysis I've seen of the event -- particularly with regard to the dust-up with Inhofe -- discusses how it's going to play to the public, as though Gore approached it as an extension of his movie, speaking for the cameras' benefit. I think that gets it all wrong. I don't ... |

| At the Environment and Public Works hearing yesterday, Sen. Inhofe (R-Okla.) displayed an amazing lack of understanding about energy as he tried to get Gore to make a meaningless pledge. We should be pursuing widely distributed, small-scale renewable electricity generation, tied together with a smart grid. Our choice is not between nuclear and coal. ... |

| Substantively, most of what Gore said to the Senate echoed what he said to the House. There were a few things to note about the Senate hearing, though: Gore's introductory remarks to the Senate (videos here) were a huge step down from his performance in the House. To my eye, he seemed shaky, hesitant, stiff, occasionally bombastic, mostly just uneven. Maybe he knows the folks in the House better? Maybe his lunch didn't agree with him? Maybe he was nervous about hi ... |
