Notable quotable Al Gore on making room for outrage |
David Roberts |
04 Sep 2007 |
Gristmill |
| This quote from Al Gore is so apt I had to pass it along: I have a lot of friends who share the following problem with me: Our sense of outrage is so saturated that when a new outrage occurs, we have to download some existing outrage into an external hard drive in order to make room for a new outrage. Al Gore calls for civil disobedience Against climate polluters |
Glenn Hurowitz |

| From The New York Times's Nicholas Kristof ($ub req'd): I ran into Al Gore at a climate/energy conference this month, and he vibrates with passion about this issue -- recognizing that we should confront mortal threats even when they don't emanate from Al Qaeda. 'We are now treating the Earth's atmosphere as an open sewer,' he said, and (perhaps because my teenage son was beside me) he encouraged young people to engage in peaceful protests to block major new carb ... |

Bogus accusations of hypocrisy against Gore They just keep coming |
Gar Lipow |
26 Jul 2007 |
Gristmill |
| There is constant drumbeat of accusations of hypocrisy against Al Gore for using offsets. Although the people who do this sort of thing are aiming for the lizard brain, I suppose it is worth pointing out that it is an obviously bogus accusation. Look, I'm an offset critic. I think offsets are one of the biggest wrong turns we can make in fighting environmental destruction, especially global warming. Al Gore, on the other hand, is a strong advocate of offsets. He hel ... |

NASA's Hansen on Live Earth, Gore, and coal It's all about coal |

| More from James Hansen's email: I was invited to go on stage at "Live Earth" at the Meadowlands, between Jon Bon Jovi and Smashing Pumpkins performances. I agreed to this, on the condition that I could bring my grandchildren, Sophie and Connor. I assumed it would be like last year when I appeared with Al Gore before a young audience, with a rather impromptu discussion of global warming. Bad assumption. When I asked "Where's Al?", I was told th ... |

Climate change message: positive or negative? Al Gore does both |
David Roberts |

| Both:'What we're facing worldwide really is a planetary emergency,' Gore said. 'I'm optimistic, but we're losing this battle badly.' That's in an article about Al Gore at the Aspen Institute. It's going to take a 90-percent decrease in carbon emissions from developed fossil fuel guzzlers like the U.S. and a 50-percent decrease worldwide to get a handle on the problem, Gore said -- changes that will take major leaps of political will far beyond what current politicians s ... |

| People magazine reports that Al Gore's daughter Sarah just got married, revealing in the course of the article that Chilean sea bass was served at the rehearsal dinner. In the Daily Telegraph, Australian Humane Society Rebecca Keeble writes that 'only one week after Live Earth, Al Gore's green credentials slipped.' Why? Because Chilean sea bass is endangered. The Day the Music Lied? Live Earth reaches an estimated 2 billion, critics harp on hypocrisy |

Daily Grist |
| The Day the Music Lied? Live Earth reaches an estimated 2 billion, critics harp on hypocrisy By all accounts, Live Earth (perhaps you've heard of it?) was a smashing success. Organizers say the shows reached about 2 billion people in 130 countries. More than 150 musical acts crooned, and supporters held more than 10,000 registered "fringe events" in addition to the main concerts on every continent. A ... |

Big Al succumbs to ethanomania Predicts rabbit out of hat in three years, too |

| Here's a film clip of Al Gore making a firm prediction that 'next generation ethanol' not dependent on corn or food crops will move out of the lab in 'three years.' He discusses the energy balance question, fails to question the use of coal for process heat, and suggests that there is some sort of 'distribution network' that's going to be built. Sad. |

Rolling Stone on the climate crisis A package of good stories |
David Roberts |

| Rolling Stone has a package of stories on Al Gore's climate crusade in the current issue. First up is a long interview with the man himself , including this nice tidbit: What figure in the administration, other than the president himself, do you hold most responsible for standing in the way of meaningful change on global warming? Oh, Cheney, of course. Both Bush and Cheney come out of the carbon-extraction industry. But Cheney has been the more forcefu ... |

| After reading so many awful stories about Al Gore, it's nice to finally come upon a good one. The reliably excellent Ryan Lizza gets it right in The New Republic. It's also worth reading the transcript of his interview with Gore, which contains much tasty goodness, including this compact, dead-on description of modern presidential campaigns:I don't want to be critical of the candidates, that's not my intention. But I don't think the modern campaign process facilitates ... |
