Al Gore's got some big bucks Thoughts on the newly announced 'we' campaign |

| So Al Gore announced a $300 million 3-year effort 'aimed at mobilizing Americans to push for aggressive reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.' My question is, wouldn't it be better to spend that money on building grassroots organizations pushing for climate change legislation instead of spending it mostly, I presume, on advertising? If $100 million was spent each year on grassroots organizations in 30 major cities, that would work out to $3 million per each major metr ... |

| If you read Juliet Eilperin's great rundown in the Washington Post, you know that today marks the launch of a massive PR effort from Al Gore's Alliance for Climate Protection. Gore has concluded that U.S. politicians will continue to be timid on climate change until the public demands otherwise. "The simple algorithm is this: It's important to change the light bulbs, but it's much more important to change the laws," he said. "The options available to ... |

Why do we respond to bozos? Churchill, not Chamberlain |

| Why are we letting pro-fossil fuel bozos hijack the only forum that environmentalists and climate-change activists have for wrestling with the daunting task of transforming America? I posted a few practical suggestions in response to David's question, 'Should we be rebutting the skeptics?' I'm going to restate one proposal -- to adopt a Craigslist-type policy allowing Grist readers to flag inappropriate posts. Gristmill is a forum for conversation and debate between ... |

Ideas should trump personalities Don't shoot the messengers |

| All social movements are susceptible to the 'cult of personality.' This is always dangerous. Not only are individuals invariably fallible, and never live up to the 'purity standards' often imposed on them, but it is their message that is most important, not the messengers.Within the environmental community, I have witnessed this personality frenzy at work in a variety of settings, which usually leads to a debasing of the dialogue. I fear that the recent uproar over Al ... |
