What to make of the new climate poll 35
Posted 2 days, 15 hours ago
There's a new Washington Post-ABC News poll out on climate change; Juliet Eilperin's got a good piece up about it (despite the terrible headline, for which she is not responsible). Having watched this story bounce around, I'm frustrated yet again by how these polls are discussed. Here's how I would write the lede to the story.

Looks like the European Trading System has worked after all
Europe to easily beat Kyoto target 1
Posted 1 week, 6 days ago
Europe made a major commitment under the Kyoto Protocol that U.S. conservatives have been telling us for years it would never achieve. In fact, the Europeans are poised to surpass their targets under the terms of the Protocol. It is no longer plausible for those who don’t want a U.S. cap-and-trade system to point to the European Trading System (ETS) as a failure. Quite the reverse.

Fourteen Democratic senators stick up for coal 6
Posted 2 weeks agoThursday, 14 Democratic senators affirmed their allegiance to the profits of polluting industry at the expense of the health and jobs of their constituents. In a letter to Senate leaders, a bloc of senators with powerful coal interests in their states called for "fair emissions allowances in climate change legislation." Their definition of "fair," unfortunately, turns out to be full taxpayer subsidies for global warming polluters.

‘Subprime carbon’: Risk or hype? 1
Posted 2 weeks, 2 days ago Friends of the Earth argues that carbon trading could bring down the economy, putting climate policy into the hands of Bernie Madoff-style Wall Street bankers. Of course, this isn’t true. It’s not even sort of true. It’s just an attempt to torpedo the Kerry-Boxer clean-energy bill by sowing confusion about an important and sensitive issue. -
New nukes? A fair shot, not a free ride 4
Posted 2 weeks, 3 days ago
KC Golden offers this advice to his friends in the nuclear industry: If you believe in nuclear power as a solution to global warming and fossil fuel dependence, you should be leading the charge for a strong national climate policy, with tight, science-based limits on carbon emissions. However, you should NOT condition your support for national climate policy on lavish subsidies from taxpayers.

To unlock wind power, put a price on carbon 7
Posted 2 weeks, 6 days ago
Why does wind power account for just 2% of North Dakota's electricity generation - barely matching wind's national share? One obvious reason is lack of transmission capability to reach load centers. But another is the extraordinary cheapness of coal.

EPA demands attorneys remove video critical of cap-and-trade 28
Posted 2 weeks, 6 days ago
Laurie Williams and Allan Zabel are EPA attorneys who have taken up advocating against cap-and-trade on behalf of rebated carbon taxes, most recently in a Washington Post op-ed. They also posted a video to YouTube making many of the same arguments at somewhat greater length. Now the EPA has instructed them to take the video down by the close of business today, at pain of disciplinary action from EPA ethics officials, and to submit any future drafts to EPA officials before posting.
