Copenhagen is not Kyoto 0
Posted 2 days, 6 hours ago The most common and widespread criticism of the Kyoto Protocol was that it did not require major developing countries like China and India to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, and the burden for reducing emissions fell largely on richer nations, like the United States and the European Union. Those concerns will be alleviated in Copenhagen, where a high-level policy agreement is expected to ensure that developing countries take on more responsibility for cutting emissions and paying for programs to do so. -
It ain't over yet
Rumors of Copenhagen’s demise have been greatly exaggerated 2

Looks like the European Trading System has worked after all
Europe to easily beat Kyoto target 1
Posted 1 week ago
Europe made a major commitment under the Kyoto Protocol that U.S. conservatives have been telling us for years it would never achieve. In fact, the Europeans are poised to surpass their targets under the terms of the Protocol. It is no longer plausible for those who don’t want a U.S. cap-and-trade system to point to the European Trading System (ETS) as a failure. Quite the reverse.

Why developing countries cannot afford failure in Copenhagen 9
Posted 2 weeks, 2 days ago
After the third day of climate talks in Barcelona, it's clear that much work remains to be done -- and 99 percent of the burden rests on the E.U. and U.S. The anger from Africa and the rest of the developing world will continue to grow, as will the carbon emissions responsible for climate change.

Gaming cap-and-trade: Should we worry? 3
Posted 2 weeks, 2 days ago
Worries about “gaming” or market manipulation sometimes crop up as an objection to cap-and-trade, often with reference to recent shenanigans in the financial markets. While distrust and concerns about scamming a carbon market are understandable, they’re not warranted.

ACES and eights: dead planet's hand
American Clean Energy Security Act strengthens U.S. ability to sabotage international climate talks 1
Posted 4 months, 2 weeks agoThe Waxman-Markey American Clean Energy Security Act (ACES) won't cut emissions. It won't serve as a platform we can improve later anymore than the Help America Vote Act (HAVA) served as a foot in the door to improve our democracy when it promoted voter purges and Diebold electronic voting machines. But one last argument is left to supporters: we need to support ACES in order to improve America's negotiating position in Copenhagen.

Europe poised to meet Kyoto target: European Trading System a success? 0
Posted 5 months, 3 weeks ago
Europe made a major commitment under the Kyoto protocol that U.S. conservatives have been telling us for years they would never achieve. It now seems clear Europeans will meet their commitment under the terms of the protocol. It will become increasingly difficult for those who don’t want a U.S. cap-and-trade system to point to the European Trading System ETS) as an obvious failure.

Why the CDM should matter to the United States 11
Posted 7 months, 1 week ago
Too many critics in the United States simply want to throw the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) baby out with the bath water. The real opportunity is to learn from the experience and use the fantastic negotiating power of the U.S. government and economy to improve the system.
