Superconductors may be the answer one day
http://www.superconductors.org/Uses.htm

Among other applications, if they ever perfect room temperature wire, a windmill in California could supply electricity in New York.

In the end, it all comes down to biodiversity. Help acquire and protect ecological hotspots, give to a conservation organization: http://www.saveourbiodiversity.com

Even now

Even now, present lower temp superconductors can be used in power storage rings. The research for particle accelerators can be applied to this effort.

But it will take $$$. Dollars wasted now on boondoggles, diversion from real solutions.
