Irony
While searching for images to accompany this story I came across a nice collection of photographs and audio recordings documenting the destruction of the Appalachian environment and its culture by mountaintop removal at the Library of Congress' American Memory project. How odd, I thought, that the same government which allows this practice to continue would also be thoughtful enough to document it and record this tragedy for posterity.

Go to memory.loc.gov and search for "mountaintop removal" for a collection of 100 photos and some audio recordings before the White House finds out and changes the LOC mission statement.

mountains. and their souls.

Because I moved to WV last year [for college] I had to comment on the 'main dish'

When I joined the enviro org on campus, we helped host a gathering to discuss mountain top removal. Sadly, only a few people from here and there came to the meeting. Larry Gibson, a passionate local, was nice enough to hand out his phone number at several enviro events. He's the one living on Kayford Mtn. where all the surrouding mountains have been flattened. In fact, he WANTS people to come up to his farm and check it out. His story breaks my heart everytime... his land was once surrounded by rolling hills. Today, you can see far off in the distance. He refuses to leave his land - even though every piece around him has been removed.
