Carob?

Whatever happened to Carob? (Am I giving away my age? Yipes.) You know, that chocolate substitute that is really not very much like chocolate at all. I never liked it much as faux chocolate bars, but rather liked the Haagen Dasz ice cream by that name.

You are going to tell me that it is a lethal substance, aren't you, and that I am going to die a painful (though hardly quick) death. Oh well; pluck the roses while ye may.

cheers,

It causes cancer in lab rats.

No, actually I made that up. However, independent laboratory tests have verified that it tastes like a mixture of mold and chalk.

more snacks

Here are some of the snacks available in the natural food store where I work, all of which can be ordered in bulk (5 - 20 pounds depending on what it is) at considerable savings: all sorts of dried fruit: pineapple, mango, papaya, various berries, bananas, apples plus gorp mixtures of nuts, fruit, and chocolate (or carob) bits. Candied ginger is a real favorite. All kinds of nuts: raw, roasted with salt, tamari, or no salt. Corn nuts, soy nuts, sesame sticks of numerous flavors, wasabi peas, health/energy/snack bars like Luna and Odwalla. . . and so much more. You can also get natural versions of m&ms and totally decadent treats like chocolate covered espresso beans (great for those all-nighters).
I remember that carob Hagen-daz. I especially loved it mixed with their honey flavor. I guess they weren't that popular because they're no longer available.

Snacks

Paper cups? Hershey chocolate? Umbra, is your blood sugar low? What's wrong with reusable cups or bowls? You mentioned fair trade chocolate and then gave your blessing to Hershey because it's local???? I am very disappointed.

Sierra Club Chocolate
You could also give your students Sierra Club chocolate, which is fair-trade, organic, (even kosher!) and a portion of the proceeds to go benefit the Sierra Club. That's TRUE guilt-free chocolate...They have a website where you can order it here:
http://sierraclub.org/store/
