"Loan guarantees" are the motto of the year. Billions for nuke plants, billions for 'clean' coal, billions for liquid coal. Billions for carmakers. Billions for mortgage bailouts. Every lobbyist in DC wants to tilt the playing field their way with risk-free money.

Offloading lending risk has worked so well for the housing market. What could possibly go wrong?

How to reduce one's risk of more competitive businesses (like wind power) from undercutting your big (nuclear, clean coal, fuel farming) subsidized boondoggle?

Use socialism.  Have friends inside government guarantee taxpayers will take on any losses you might incur and block subsidies and support for alternatives.

Capitalism is risky, socialism eases the downside for corporate feudalists.
