My hero, Ralph Nader

If Nader moves global warming to the top of his campaign issues, he will outshine (pun intended) all the other candidates, as he has done in the last three national elections. One of his heroes is the late Dave Brower, who was my boss and to whom I owe my entire environmental career and consciousness. Every single thing Nader says is accurate, true, and vitally important. In this respect he is way ahead of the US Green Party which had the unpersipacity to squash his candidacy in 2004 and thus render themselves irrelevant. Nader is not only our leading public citizen but our national hero. Anyone with a shred of brains, integrity and honesty knows this and knows that we can no longer settle for second or third best, or the lesser of two evils, which is evil in any case. We should all get out and carry petitions for Nader and drop our illusions about the Democrats, especially those in congress who are faking and pretending to be concerned about the environment. They are as fanatic about corporate capitalism as the Republicans and as slimy and sneaky too, having kept Nader off state ballots in the last election. Let's mobilize around someone we like and trust and can vote for without holding our noses or violating our principles.

ugh.
Nader is a lightweight on this issue. The cap-and-trade plan (with 80% CO2 emissions reduction and a 100% credit auction) proposed by both major Democrats is far superior to a carbon tax. What's worse is that he buys the "offsets are indulgences" frame, rather than using critical thinking to analyze their benefits and deficiencies.

And with today's speech from Obama linking foreign policy and the Iraq war with global warming, we're seeing that the Democrats understand both the stakes and the best strategy in far more depth than cranky uncle Nader. It's time to give up the illusion that he's relevant.

Who's leading?

If the Democrats have a viable strategy on global warming (questionable), then they owe a debt to Ralph Nader who has been out in front of them on these issues for years.

Ralph's expertise is in consumer protection and corporate crime. No amount of politically safe, feel good environmental policies will overcome the coporate control of our decision making process. That's where the real fight is and that's where Nader is taking it.

The conservative is always trying to hang on to what is fated to go- segregation, paternalism, fossil fuels. While progressives want to move ahead to what is destined to be- a sustainable economy, a just society, equal rights. Ralph Nader is leading the way. Let's hope the Democrats follow his lead.

nuclear power? no thank you!
Nader is a lightweight on the issue? And you prefer Obama? when Obama says (from your link):

"Through our own cap and trade system and investments in new sources of energy, we can end our dependence on foreign oil and gas, and free ourselves from the tyranny of oil-rich states from Saudi Arabia to Russia to Venezuela. We can create millions of new jobs here in America. And we can secure our planet for our children and grandchildren."

Do you know what the "new sources of energy" Obama is referring to are? What is it that we are going to "invest" in, obama? Wind or solar energy? why doesn't he give the specifics, please?

Oh, by the way, hasn't Obama voted to fund the war, the same as Hilary? Who is he to complain about the war he votes to fund?

You are aware of Obama's (and Hilary's) ties to Exelon, aren't you?

http://www.dissidentvoice.org/2008/02/meet-barack-obama-t ...

Sorry, I don't want a nuclear meltdown to kill or injure my children, or anyone elses children. This is very serious. We can and should just go solar. Nuclear Power? That's not the kind of "change" that I "Hope" for.

Knowing what's going on in a Corporate controlled State takes WORK. Thank you Ralph, for all the good things you've done to protect the PEOPLE of this Country. Amazing how quickly they forget, or perhaps they just don't know. Almost everyone's lives, or that of friends and relatives of theirs, have been improved and made safer because of you, Some wouldn't be alive today, if not for Ralph Nader!
Nader for President?

Although I don't know Ralph's position on every issue, I'm certain he takes the right stand on most of them, more so than any other candidate.

Unfortunately, he cannot get elected. He is the Eugene Debs of the early 21st Century. Debs ran several times on the Socialist ticket, never got elected, and once even had to campaign from a jail cell where he was put by Woodrow Wilson for criticizing America's participation in World War I.

Thank goodness Ralph hasn't been arrested, even though the Espionage Act of 1917 is still in effect.

The trouble with Ralph is that he just cannot get elected, and for two reasons. First, corporate America is never going to allow it. John Edwards found out what happens when you tell the truth about "the business of America:" the media (owned by big corporations) doesn't bother to cover you, and you lose elections because too few people have heard your message.

Second, Ralph just doesn't have the personality to get elected. A politician has to smile a lot, glad hand a lot, make deals he'd rather not make, and generally appear to be a knight (possibly a knight-ess) on a white horse. Ralph seems more like your brainy uncle, the college professor, who would never even think of getting on a horse. Even Adlai Stevenson had a better chance at being president than Ralph.

Ralph could solve both of those electability problems simply by being outrageous. The press can't avoid covering outrageous acts, and such things would give Ralph a less cerebral image. For instance, he could do a "Brittney" and be photographed getting out of a car while flashing his naked crotch. That would guarantee at least the front page of the New York Post, even though Rupert Murdoch does own it.
