BlondBlog

The posting on Darryl Hannah impresses me with her commitment to leading by example and the power of the arts in informing!
Only wish some comfortable strategist would see the appeal for sponsorship, and act!

Eco-celebs

While many really ARE serious about "saving the world", some just are "jumping on the bandwagon" without even really knowing the issues. There's nothing worse than a filthy-rich celebrity who admonishes their fans to "save the redwoods" while still owning several vast residences. If they REALLY cared about saving redwoods, they'd BUY lands from timber companies for a scant million or so.

It's all fine and noble for these big stars to push for good things but, if they don't pony up some bucks, can anyone respect their views at all?

I was having similar thoughts there, Backcut

She could buy up some redwood forests and put them under conservation easements where they would suck carbon out of the air for hundreds of years. Instead she ops to buy carbon offsets and consume fuel and acreage like there is no tomorrow. Her heart is in the right place but the road to hell is paved with good intentions. We need better thinking combined with good intentions. My chunk of forest has enough trees to offset the CO2 produce by four Americans for about 150 years, extends the size of a state forest, provides wildlife habitat, a watershed, recreation, solitude, and enough self-righteous bragging rights to smack down just about any other envrionmentalist in an ecological footprint pissing match.

Hannah Supports the Awful Sierra Club

Hannah is the host of Sierra Club's new TV shows. While Sierra Club's TV program is beneficial, Sierra Club as an organization is sliding downhill. Now, the Sierra Club is promoting the destruction of nature. Paul Watson, a director of the Sierra Club, recently resigned after this organization decided to fund a sport hunting trip to promote hunting. The Sierra Club had a contest for people to send in essays about why they hunt. One of the prizes was a $12,700 hunting vacation in Alaska.

Gayle Miller of Sierra Club e-mailed me about my concern saying, "If we were to shut out hunters and anglers, we also shut out a massive number of Michigan residents who care very much about the natural world--even if they decide to go out and shoot at it." Of course they should not shut out hunters. But, that does not mean they have to outwardly promote it. As Watson says, "This is John Muir's Sierra Club. It is not supposed to be the Sahara Club. You can't love nature with a gun."
