"elephant in the room"

Joel Hunter sounds like a very reasonable fellow, so I am grateful to read his words in this well-constructed interview. He seems to borrow the rhetoric of progressive Catholics, when he criticizes those who have centered their life on being "pro-life," saying that they seem only to have regard for vulnerable human life when it is in the womb, and to stop caring about it when it is outside. He also indicates the importance of educating pastors about "creation care," so that it may be preached in local congregations; that is similar to what I have written in Gristmill more than once, though the Catholic context is rather different, about what is not yet preached about environmental issues in Catholic parishes, which definitely deserves to be preached there.

Hunter seemed to avoid the "elephant in the room" question. Sure, we can believe him that sincere evangelical voters, who are not to be confused with the outraged fundamentalist critics of society whom he mentions early on, will in the final analysis want to do the right thing. Meanwhile, though, many of these evangelicals are subject to a lot of propaganda, from Rush Limbaugh and his ilk, asserting that "liberalism" in general is bad, and every single detail of the "liberal" agenda must be eschewed absolutely, by anyone who wants to deserve to be called a conservative.
