Renewable energy and efficiency are much cheaper than burning fossil fuels. The asymmetrical force of concentrated coal capital is preventing the political emergence of low-carbon competition.

Superconducting cable

Couple those Nevada-based generators with the newly available superconducting power transmission cable(a pilot line was recently installed-certainly VERY expensive at this stage)and we could have that power we need in our homes. Of course, conservation and efficiencies are coupled with cleaner generation.

The mellotron is your friend.

Silver Buckshot
Dr. Hansen:

I agree on the necessity and urgency of weaning ourselves off energy from fossil fuels, and I admire the clarity of your call to Jim Rogers and other captains of industry.

I also encourage you not to confuse carbon offsets generally with tree-planting projects. The best carbon offsets do just what you seek -- hasten the deployment of clean energy. I spend much of my time talking to dairy producers that can't quite make a digester project work financially. Carbon offset revenues materially help these projects remain viable, reduce dairy emissions, and provide clean energy in rural American communities. The reduction in greenhouse gas emissions is real and immediate.

Please don't dismiss the efforts of hundreds of thousands of regular Americans dedicated to reducing their carbon footprint. These people aren't celebrities, and their concern isn't just for show:

http://www.terrapass.com/blog/posts/terrapass-custo

Offsets are of course only a part of the solution. Think of them as some of the "silver buckshot" that you've spokenof so eloquently in the past.

Overshoot, that's the word.
We have already overshot the ability of natural systems to deal with any further emissions. Simply getting to zero emissions just isnt' going to be enough in the long run as we show little sign of reducing emissions in the short run.

We are going to have to put the carbon back into the ground in such forms that it will stay there long enough for natural systems to adjust. The only proven example of large scale, human, carbon capture from the atmosphere is in the Terra Preta soils of the amazon. Various groups are experimenting with recreating these soils and understanding the effects of adding charcoal to soil and they can be found at terrapreta.bioenergylists.org.

All over the world people are one by one burying lumps of charcoal in an effort to remediate that vast trainloads of coal that is burnt by industrialized commerce. They're also trying to improve their soils and grow some nice grains and veggies too. And while some plants are happy for now overall the human race is losing along with everything but cyanobacteria and jellyfish.

Paying the rent
This isn't heroic at all:

Neither carbon sequestration nor nuclear power can help in the near-term, and they both have serious issues even over the longer term.

Some of what Hansen does can be considered rolling with the punches and punching back, but the above amounts to stooling for the guards. If he is as competent as the role he has chosen requires, he believes neither statement.
