He Doesn't Suck

Gov. Crist has been a pleasant surprise on a few issues -- including climate change.

However, I wouldn't pat FP&L on the back too much. Green power still is not available here for purchase, and they have only recently come onboard with alt energy. Moreover, they ask for citizen contributions to do so. They have a misleading program called Sunshine Energy, which might sound like green energy but is merely an offset. I think that the energy companies should use their own profits to fund alt energy solutions.

Florida is the "Sunshine State". Isn't developing solar in the state a no-brainer that should have been going on for years. Climate also perfect for geothermal and wind (if there was actually a square inch left for wind turbines).

I do give FP&L credit for the programs that they are developing (including study of biofuel from waste biomass -- such as orange peels, sugar cane). Too bad they have waited so long. Hope that they will make up for lost time.

Crist Is a Republican

Crist is for construction of 5 new nuclear reactors so his buddies can pave over the rest of Florida.
He supports the ethanol scam. His corporate welfare Sugar baron friends plan ethanol plants in the middle of the Everglades. His water managers plan to pipe river water south. He hasn't regulated dairies which have become cesspools polluting hundreds of springs and rivers.
Green? NO

Someone please answer this question...

I moved from Florida to NC in 1990 and about that time Florida had dropped its auto safety and emissions inspection programs. 18 years later and Florida still hasn't restarted its auto emissions inspection program.

So how can Crist be such a big green proponent if the State of Florida isn't even checking what and how much coming out of it's tailpipes???

Every time I go down to Orlando to visit my folks, I see the throngs of giant pickups and SUVs speeding down I-95 and I-4. The way I see it, Crist needs to start practicing what he preaches.

Re: Someone please answer this question...

First of all the emissions inspection program ended here in Florida in July, 2000. Only a few counties were in the program, not the entire state. It SHOULD have been encompassing the whole state, but the Florida government decided to just end it rather than spend the money to set up state-wide. Not to mention that it was unpopular with the rural folks.

Charlie Crist has got the cart before the horse

You're right, it was safety inspections that they did away with around 1990. Re: emissions inspections, I found these statements on the Florida DMV site...

"In July 1, 2000, the State of Florida abolished the auto emissions test requirement for all vehicles throughout the state. The smog-tackling program only lasted nine years and had often been a fiercely political issue for many Florida residents and legislators.

Several counties allegedly registered air clean enough to make the tests obsolete, but even the counties with continuing poor air quality are looking for alternate ways to breathe easy again.

Meanwhile, if you spot a smoking vehicle on the highway, your only recourse is to hold your breath―currently there is no program in Florida for reporting gross emissions polluters."

Charlie Crist has got the cart before the horse by acting like a hero on this EPA emissions issue: he should first get the vehicle emissions program started again state-wide and THEN join Arnold on the soapbox. Bet he'd be really popular in Florida then!
