eat less pig?

Thanks for a great article that pairs problems with problem-solving.

Statistically speaking, if we were to eat as much pig product as we do now, could sustainable practices produce enough? Part of the answer--alongside trying to fight the CAFOs-- is also to eat way less pig, right? I know I need to be doing that, and I am wondering if there are statistics to nudge me along...

Iowa

It sure is good to see Tom out spreading the word. I still am waiting for the proof of the waste flowing from the hog farms into the streams. Having lived here my whole life, and went to college here, outsiders, as that is what we call people who like to come in and tell us what is wrong with us, miss the point. Lots of the problems today started decades ago. In the 70's and 80's, farmers were all told to focus on one thing. The colleges and the BANKERS said you can't do everything, just do one. It may have been raising chickens, farrowing pigs, feeding pigs, but the problems were not created by us. If you did not do what the all KNOWING BANKERS and college professionals, you did not get money. When things fell apart in the 80's, no one wanted to help but the big corporations. I don't care for them either, as I raise all my own food, but those farmers had families to feed. The arguments that you make against the big hog companies could be made about car manufaturers, drug companies, clothes makers, etc. Tom, why don't you stay home, and let the rest of us find our own happiness, instead of pointing out our problems.

Young farmers project

"Marqusee's next big project is to raise $2 million to give no-interest loans to help young would-be organic farmers buy land in the county."

What could I do to help contribute to this, if possible?

Contribution

This was a great article. I'm with Tatharlin - is there any way to contribute to helping would-be organic farmers get started? There are loads of charities for other issues (AIDS, starving children, illiteracy, flood victims...). Are there any charities, or even financial participation organizations, to help organic farmers buy land or otherwise get started?

Thanks.

Homestead Program Project
Thank you for your kind comments.

At the present time, I am working with a major company for intial contribution. However, I love the idea about having contributions from those who's heart understands the issues and want to make a difference for rural communities.

Check out our new Website: http://www.woodburyorganics.com

I am working to get all the information on that site - and would appreciate comments about how we can best serve our small family farmer.
