copyrights

It is very wrong of you to violate copyright by posting an entire article here. You have no right to do that and you should take it down immediately. Publications--and I shouldn't have to tell Gristmill about this, of all places--rely on copyright to make money. Without this money there ARE no articles and no content. You have violated their copyright and it's not a trivial matter. Take down your illegal content immediately.

Fair Use
Read this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fair_use

Other sites, such as CommonDreams.org, republish copywrite-protected articles in their entirety every day. The issue is full of murky gray, but read the wiki; it's not exactly fun reading, but illustrates the many angles fair use cases must be looked at from.

For myself, I'd say this: if Gristmill wants to republish a single article, that's fine. If they do it consistently, there's a good chance that an organization like Greenwire can claim damages, and that would be a bit unethical considering they lie in the same readership space as one another. Finally, if Greenwire asks the content be removed Grist should do so.

copyright violations

You're not allowed to violate copyright "sometimes." Once is more than enough, and Gristmill and David Roberts are in voilation of Fair Use statutes. Greenwire makes their living by selling their content, and people who steal it are in effect stealing their income. David Roberts is stealing from Greenwire. That isn't hard to understand and it's wrong the very first time and it should be taken down immediately.
