British Conservative Party Leader David Cameron
From The Guardian Aug. 8, 2006:

The green aura surrounding David Cameron faded to a dullish turquoise yesterday after the Conservative leader confessed that he only rides his trusty - and much photographed - bicycle to Westminster once a week.

...

He also took the opportunity to point out that it was "not true at all" that a car still followed him to work carrying his shoes and papers. "That did happen once or twice and I've now made sure that it will never happen again," he said.

N.B. the darling puppy

Funny how the Conservatives, who are assumed to be natural pals of the US Republicans, in many ways are to the left of the Democrats. Funny, too, how Labour's Blair ended up being W.'s lapdog (definitely not the "darling puppy" of my title).

But perhaps an even odder state of foreignness is that the presumably Conservatives-supporting business community in the UK, if they are indeed on board about this "Go Green" thing, are tolerant of environmental regulatory legislation, while of course the GOP-supporting business community in this country hates and detests such stuff.

The photo of Cameron holding that beautiful baby hound-dog, in the context of greenward politics, ought to be taken to heart by all those stolid environmentalists who have lately on Gristmill's screens sought to put a great deal of distance between themselves and animal welfare. Whether or not you think the connexion between animal welfare and environmentalism makes logical sense, it might be a winning tactic for environmentalism-favoring political leaders.

Chickens are our cousins!
So are other sensitive animals!
Enough is enough!
No more factory farms!

Blue = Green?

In one way the Tories are a green party as their natural constituency is the aristocratic upper class who own most of the green space in britain.

Cameron's efforts appear to be well-meaning but the party isn't called the conservative party for nothing, and it's organs like the Daily mail and telegraph are foaming at the mouth at his efforts to be more inclusive and environmentally friendly.

As pointed out, some of his efforts to appear green have been a bit ham-fisted, like cycling to work with a lexus in tow, or travelling to visit a retreating glacier by private jet.

the tories won't win the next election.

the only people who won't remember the horrors of the last 5 years of the last tory government are first-time voters, and they only vote in big brother polls.

How green is my deer park

Thanks, SeamusEnright, for connecting the dots for me. I see now that David Cameron's puppy is likely to be a fox hound.

But what is a nice(-seeming) Celtic kid like David Cameron doing, cavorting with Anglo-Saxon Lords and Dames?

And thanks, Bart, for the Caroline Lucas essay. It is sad that even the Liberal Democrats are swept up in the green spin. But it is encouraging that Brits will not need to fear "shivering around a candle in a cave" -- I love that image! -- if they do as she tells them to.

She writes:
<<
The argument is often made that we must have global growth in order to achieve poverty eradication. But, in truth, it's a very inefficient strategy.
>>

Exhilaratingly revolutionary!

What ever happened to our old friend Legume Sam? He would be enjoying this so much.
