interesting
Yes, this sort of arrangement of monetizing ecosystem services looks to be one way forward. The discussion we had about it recently here

was pretty good, and then I turned up this eg of it being done with rainforests, maybe you saw this too:

Cutting biofuel subsidies

Cutting subsidies for biofuels and their freedstocks is vital. I'm not sure what this investment will really do?

Will it eventually lead to monetizing air, water, and earth itself? I think that's the eventual aim. It scares me.

These efforts all feel like hedge fund..green. I always suspect that bottomline considerations will kick in somewhere down the line. When some company disguised as environmental buys these rights someday.

Then who can stop the destruction, government wilderness preservation may be strictly ceremonial by then. A few more generations of bonnie prince duuhbya type leadership and it's a distinct probability.

Then it'll be chinese, dalls, and saudi billionaire vacation homes in Yosemite.

Huh, I seemed to have missed that post, Eric
Some real good discussion followed.

Those links to Time and New Scientist also contained some pearls, Maywa.

I hear you Dr.X. This may turn out to be a write off. Experiments by billions of entrepreneurs sharing knowledge over the Internet is our best bet.

In the end, it all comes down to biodiversity. Poison Darts--Protecting the biodiversity of our world

Beyond my comments there, I would add that this project should not even be considered w/o some understanding of the fraud exposed in the "more flexible" parts of Kyoto we bullied in, i.e. CDM and offsets. This was written several years before Nature really broke the story in 2007.
I found this other article interesting. The position they take isnt so appealing to me, but it's an insight into how the local politics play out...
I'm pleased w/ certain externalities being recognized, but for the reasons above, maintain a cautious optimism as Kyoto is updated w/ this new push for including "deforestation prevention."

amazingdrx: Will it eventually lead to monetizing air, water, and earth itself?
I have definitely heard the idea of trading "rain credits" tossed around. Anyone see "Memron"?
