UTC Doing Geothermal Power
Once again you take any chance to slam the President, even though his policy correct.

You say:

But the budget also calls for the zeroing out of all funding for promising geothermal and hydropower technologies.

The reason given is that these are mature technologies that don't need bootstrap funding.

Absolutely right.

Take geothermal...it's being promoted by UTC...United Technologies...a company that most Libs would not want to get more funding -- but UTC is making alternative energy, fuel cells, hydrogen and geothermal work commercially!

Engineers at the United Technologies Research Center (UTRC), a unit of United Technologies based in East Hartford, CT, say they have developed a low-cost system that can utilize low-temperature geothermal resources.

It's the Enviro-Libs worst nightmare! Large commercial corporations like General Motors and UTC delivering clean, renewable fuel! No wonder Al Gore is pissed...corporate America just ate his lunch!

The buck stops over there

He's the President, so theoretically he's accountable for what happens on his watch. And while I'm not an expert on the energy budget (by any means), only $148 million in the federal budget to cover solar, geothermal & hydro? THAT seems like the problem to me. And if 'mature technologies' don't get funding, I suppose that means oil, gas and nuclear have been zeroed out, too...

research and development

It is anti-intellectual to think that developments in deep-earth geothermal energy collection and oceanic hydropower are over and done, just because the simpler technologies for geothermal and hydropower right now seems to have plateaued. Researchers who understand in an out-of-the-box way the real potential of those energy sources should not starve, just because the research dollars depend on what can make a profit soon. In the same category belongs the potential for atmospheric collectors of solar energy.
