re: am I really a republican

"So I have to ask myself, am I really a Republican?"

So resign already. Yes, the GOP has been run for years now by fools who convinced the public they don't have to pay for government. It was a stunningly stupid, evil thing to do and has done us irreversible harm. So what is he doing still being a member of this party?

Cap & Trade

I heard a radio report on cap & trade programs in Europe, and they sounded incredibly complex and subject to abuse. It sounds simple: a company that wants to increase emissions buys credits from one that is willing to decrease emissions. The problem is, those who are decreasing emissions have to prove that they would not have taken those actions without the payments. How do you demostrate why you are making energy efficiencies in your building or your factory or your vehicle fleet? It takes mountains of paperwork. And of course, we would like to see everyone improve their energy efficiency even without being paid to do it. I like Al Gore's idea: a carbon tax instead of the payroll tax.

Cap & Trade
The Carbon Tax with a tax reduction on work and enterprise is just what our economy needs. Cap & Trade is really "Cap & Charade". A Congressional Report shows that a direct carbon tax would be five times more effective than cap & trade schemes. There is a role for government and one of those roles is to correct a price system that doesn't include true environmental(and other external) costs. A carbon tax would provide incetives for energy conservation and the development of clean renewable sources. see http://www.carbontax.org/ for a good information on the carbon tax.
