It is the duty of all of us

to fight buzz words, which are the linguistic equivalents of zebra mussels and asian carp. One word I treat with scorn is sustainable. If it ever meant anything to begin with, it was long ago rendered useless by the greenwashers. Empowerment is another word I love to hate.

The big word we have to worry about is environmental. It is to the tongue, what the Star Spangled Banner is to song. An abomination. I think that Grist should start a contest to find its replacement. It has to be short, but potent and not seen before. It would be nice if it did not lend itself to easy adoption by the green washers. I volunteer to be on the panel of judges.

Annoying yes

But it does show that the green revolution is starting to take hold in mass delusional media.

Who is this annoying the most? Lobbyists, deniers, and their ilk. Check the comments on the website.

Christy Loop of Woodbridge, Va., says that 'leaving a carbon footprint' has become the new 'politically incorrect.' "How can we not, in one way or another, affect our natural environment?"

I didn't see any limboob talking point phrases on the "banned" list. Does that mean we are winning the media battle? Maybe so.

The meaning

The words themselves aren't the problem. Their problem is the meaning that has been associated with them. If a word is "banned" there will simply be another word with the same meaning to take it's place. It would be better if we had a clear and precise definition of each word. Then when someone was being unsustainable they could be called out as liars and frauds.

"Four-letter" words or more.

How's about "boots on the ground" as a way of depersonalizing war casualties and a way to make Secretaries of State (current)seem like "one of the boys" i.e. ignorant.

Randino, I second your nomination

mostly because of your acid assessment of the Star-Spangled Banner. Why aren't more Americans embarrassed that the tune derives from an old English drinking song? (Now that melody make sense!)

I don't even read articles that mention "cap and trade" -- not as ubiquitous as "carbon footprint", but far emptier of meaning.

My #1 candidate -- oh, hell, I didn't even finish the sentence before I had two -- my TWO main candidates are "friendly fire" and "Department of Defense".
