And yet, people still vote for them to prevent gun-owning fetuses from being forced to gay-marry.

They've just become comically evil at this point. Eventually the entire Republican caucus will descend into monocle-wearing, goatee-sporting, cat-stroking, maniacal-cackling supervillains.

If the conservatives want to regain the respect of the American people, they have got to stop relying on distortions and start building up (and deserving) a reputation for speaking the truth. Every time they spout propaganda, they just dig themselves deeper into the hole.

Even if reducing GHG emissions does turn out to place heavier burdens on some communities more than others, we can't afford to delay action any longer--it just means we have to be committed to dealing fairly with the complications as they arise. Restructuring the energy sector of the economy will change the economic winners and losers, but this is good, right and normal. Businesses will adapt and individuals will change jobs--just as they always do in a dynamic economy.

You can't just blame the Republicans, though they're certainly to blame. As Bill Maher recently put it, we have a center-right party, the Democrats, and an insane party, the Republicans. In addition to the absurdity of having only two major parties in a country with 300 million people, we don't even have two parties that have significant differences on the major issues, such as war, the environment, and overpopulation. I'm starting to feel that elections are useless.

Bill hit that one on the head, didn't he? Don't give up yet, though. That is largely how we wound up with the worst president in U.S. history; remember 2000? What we need is a strong FOUR party system on the libertarian-right and left to counter the corporatist (my word) influence of the establishment parties. In the short term I think we need to hold the Dems to account and support as many insurgent "green" primary candidates as possible, and support third-party options whenever feasible. We need to make the Dems understand that they can't coast their way into the corporate money their opponents enjoyed for the last couple of decades without consequences.
