@april:

"I make a basic tomato
sauce in late summer with fresh paste tomatoes and can it for use all
year long. For this one, I turn to store-bought canned tomatoes."

I'm expecting a bumper crop of tomatoes later this summer. What's your version of this recipe using the fresh tomatoes?

The idea of being able to store my homegrown and use it during the off season really appeals...! Thanks in advance, and great post and pointer to the earth oven.

If you should not breathe wood smoke because of the dangerous toxicants in it, why on earth would you eat something drenched in it?

Aside from that, your neighbors won't appreciate your smoke drifting into their homes.

Use an electric or gas appliance to cook with outside and save your health and the friendship of your neighbors.

Let see:

Electric heat -- produces many times the amount of CO2 considering the heat conversion rate, but not in your backyard, only from the Power plant to the atmosphere (Google: power plant efficiency )

Natural gas -- bout the same co2, yet wood is a bio-renewable resource. Frankly, if wood smoke was that poisonous, our gene pool would not have made it past 1000 BC. We would not be here.

If your cooking heat isn't solar, you are going to have an impact. It is just a matter of choosing your poison.

Listen - wood smoke IS carcinogenic, and the particles in the smoke are particularly harmful to kids. There is a lot of science on this, for example, folks who consume lots of smoke-cured foods have higher incidences of stomach cancer. CO2 is NOT carcinogenic (though we all know it's other problems).

When humans slept in caves with wood fires, they also had a life expectancy less than half what it is today. They also excercised constantly and ate the freshest food available.

Sure, all cooking has impact of some sort, but there are better choices out there that don't require your neighbors to close their windows on a summer night because you decided to burn trees on your patio.

Great! All I would add to the recipe and production is a bottle of Sancere for the prep and a bottle of dry rose for the table. Brava!
