The answer to the climate crisis is not MORE CARS. Think trains, urban centers, reduced consumption people! Even that pales in comparison to CO2 emitted by industrial processes. Tighter regulation of top emitters is the key, everything else is just style points.

"... that will give automakers the confidence to make carbon-free cars ..."

Did I miss something here?

Exactly how are electric cars that are charged from the grid, which is powered 49% coal-fired generation, "carbon-free"? Or is this a reference to "clean coal"? Possibly the replacement battery is charged from only solar and wind power?

Just curious.

I prefer to think of these as a very good solution for closed geographical areas, like Hawaii. Personally I would still rather have a vehicle with the option to go far, spontaneously. A plug-in hybrid will fit that bill nicely. I cannot wait to get one.

A better place to drive in maybe but not a better place to live in. By making the cost of driving per mile less expensive, this will only encourage people to drive further, creating more sprawl, most congestion and more environmentally destructive road construction. By encouraging sprawl and large housings in remote suburbs, this will actually increase greenhouse gas emissions.

High speed trains, mass transit and electric bicycles are the transportation solutions of the future that will make the world a better place to live in.

This guy is not another Steve Jobs, he is another Henry Ford. Gas powered cars were touted as the environmentally sound alternative to the horse. Look how well Ford's vision turned out.

Yeah, imagine a long weekend or a hurricane evacuation for that matter. Are they going to keep hundreds of expensive batteries stored at stations just for people to use on weekend gettaways? Even worse, that is when the cars will likely be packed full of people and gear making them heavy and lowering their milage. Are people going to want to stop every hour for a new battery. It will take forever to get anywhere.
