Lay off the ladies, please!

I love the idea of Grist's non-Hallmarked Earth Day cards, but it was a real drag to scroll down the page and see yet another example of women's bodies (sans head or face, per the traditional advertiser's usage) tacked onto the earth.

PLUS, let's get real here - probably half of the ladies on Grist's site would be more likely to be in work boots, birkenstocks, sandals, flipflops, or bare foot, for that matter, than they would in a pair of clearly painfully high heels. And don't even get me started on the lack of leg hair! It's disrespectful to all of the real, smart women out there to objectify women's bodies like this image does, and it's bad for our daughters, little sisters, and young women in general to constantly be beaten about the head with idealized pairs of disembodied legs. We expect more from you than that.

The environmental community is the place I seek out to find respite FROM the sexualization (and objectification) of women, not to see a pair of skinny legs in heels tacked onto an image of our planet. I just think you're better than that, Grist.

Hey MTrainor

Get over it.

It's big, it's wet . . .

MTrainor,

I'm always up for a good laugh, so long as it's not patently offensive, which the photo isn't.

My annoyance with the card (which made me laugh) is that the reference is to a portion of the male anotomy--and the legs are female!  Those ought to be nice MALE legs there, to match the greeting card sentiment.

Look closer

As one of the birkenstock wearing lesbians you were kind of referring to (although I shave my legs, heaven forbid), hate to tell you but I like to look at the hot legs too.  At least they have some nice muscle tone to them instead of an anorexic look.

And, by the way, the legs are barefoot, not in high heels.

It could be worse

At least they balanced the objectified woman-globe be including a man with his head on fire. That was comforting to me.

Will we ever know?

All this discussion and apparent controversy about the female legs and possible male references in the card message remind us all appearances can be deceiving. After all, with modern technology, androids, transvestites and lab or other creations, how do you know the legs of the image presented are even human? Our individual assumptions themselves offer much food for thought about the limits of perception. Happy Earth Day!

Positive change begins with each of us
She is barefoot!

The legs are barefoot.

They are!  At first I also thought she was in high heels.

But yea, it is talking about a part of the male anatomy, but showing a female.  I'm so confused.
