Traded In His Chevy for a Cad Attack

Speaking in Detroit, Obama tells Big Auto where to go

Presidential contender Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) took his rhetoric to Detroit yesterday, challenging the U.S. auto industry to get with the times. "The need to drastically change our energy policy is no longer a debatable proposition," he said in a speech to the city's Economic Club. "It is not a question of whether, but how; not a question of if, but when. For the sake of our security, our economy, our jobs, and our planet, the age of oil must end in our time." His big talk, which got big ovations, was backed by some medium-ish proposals: an annual fuel-efficiency increase of 4 percent (similar to the Bush administration's plan); a $3 billion incentive to help retool factories toward that goal; and assistance covering health-care costs for current and retired autoworkers. While no auto execs were present, others in the audience admired the candidate's stance on the industry's "unsustainable" path. Said one, "I think it took a lot of courage to come to Detroit and lay it on the line."

Put Up Your $$$ American

In 36 months, Chevy will product The Volt.

A car which can run electric, gas-hydrid, or fuel cell.

It is sharp looking, and has advanced drive train technology.

It will get 150 mph on a 60 mile cruise trip.

GM doesn't need subsidies...it needs customers.

If Americans really want to support their country AND solve the Greenhouse Problem, they should start saving their pennies to buy the Volt.

As Donna Rice once proclaimed from the fanny of her jeans, "No Excuses."

I actually agree

I agree, denier, that GM doesn't need subsidies but customers.  People who buy Chevy vehicles want something rugged, individualistic, untamed,  imposing, American.  Nobody in the rural midwest going to buy a sissy car named the Volt; Chevy customers want cars with names that will tear up the frontier just by saying them: Tahoe, Trailblazer, Silverado, Colorado, Avalanche - or maybe they'll go with Jeep: Patriot, Compass, Commander, Liberty, Grand Cherokee, etc.

I would say that Ford is the most reputable US car company to have tackled environmental issues.  More manufacturing plants should hire William McDonough to environmentalize their factories...

Meanwhile, I still argue that we as a country are going to have to look to alternatives to cars if we are to ever get anywhere with GW.  GM should be investing in high-tech trains, if they really are thinking about their future as a company...
