Martin Who?

An Inconvenient Truth wins Oscars, Al Gore wins affection

Rock star. Superhero. Visionary. That pre-Oscar hype paled next to last night's event, which saw Al Gore -- looking blissfully bloated in a Ralph Lauren tux -- take home an award for Best Documentary Feature and Best Original Song. OK, technically the Goracle himself didn't win either of the statuettes for An Inconvenient Truth, but you wouldn't know it from the on-stage spectacle. "All of us who made this film ... did so because we were moved to act by this man," said Truth director Davis Guggenheim, before handing his Oscar to Gore, who called on the people of the world to solve the climate crisis. Later, singer Melissa Etheridge licked Dreamgirls, then praised Gore "for showing that caring about the earth is not ... red or blue. We are all green." Gore had also spent an earlier moment in the sun when he and Leonardo DiCaprio waltzed onstage to announce that the Oscars had officially gone green, then spoofed the will-he-or-won't-he political swirl. He won't. But maybe he should.

How Much Energy Did The Oscars Use?

Could you name a more globally Earth wasting event than the Oscars?   It's the very epitome of planet-rape.

Of course, Grist cartwheels in glee about people talking "green" within a system that consumes more BTU's in a single awards ceremony, than the bottom 50 nations in a month.

Negative Nelly

Wouldn't it be nice if the Oscars used little to no energy?

That could happen, once awareness is raised.

Or, we could sit on out computers, and just attack anything that is wasteful....
Jumping around, waving your arms and yelling about how bad something is won't change it.

You can't stop the Oscars from happening.  So, why not try and make them as "green" as possible?

Practicality...who needs it?...Not the Environmental Front, we've got raving loons!!!

Let's be happy that a mainstream American event included a "green" message.  Cultures don't change overnight...

Environmental Solution

I have a technology that will remove 97% of the wastefulness in our society: The Guillotine.

Let's use it the way the French did and cut out the Hollywooders, Billiongreenies and Gasbags who are among the biggest hypocrites when it comes to telling the rest of us to "be green".

Sheeesh.

A prophet for our times

Jabailo,

You comments do much to further the public discourse.  I hope you continue to enlighten Grist readers with your impregnable wit.  If only political leaders would read your comments, we could abandon discussion of environmentalism once and for all.  Keep up the good work!

My sentiment exactly

If the awards event wasn't bad enough, read the article here: http://www.drudgereport.com/flash.htm

Talk about an inconvenient truth...

gore at the oscars

I think gore's attendance and "smarmance" at the oscars set back the movement rather than forwarded it. I think his credibility is called into question by those who are not quite convinced of the seriousness of the climate situation[ the very folks we need to convince]by hanging out with the hollywood types.

next prez

I'm sick of media whoopla re: Obama & Clinton. they're ingnoring the most qualified candidate: NM Gov. Bill Richardson.  Yes, he is working hard to turn NM Green, has improved students' standings in schools + was US Rep for years in CD3 + was Clinton's diplomat worldwide to negotiate release of many hostages + was UN Ambassador + Energy Sec'y.  Just because he lacks $$.....  Richardson can fill Gore's vacancy & then some!
