Hybrid Lowdown

Toyota will introduce new advertising, incentives for Prius

To many, the Toyota Prius is synonymous with months-long waiting lists. But just as the automaker has stepped up production on its hybrid darling, sales have plateaued. Fearing that the car lacks mainstream appeal, Toyota is training dealers in Prius sweet talk, hyping incentives like low- and no-interest financing, and kick-starting its very first Prius ad campaign. Priuses (Prii?) made up half of U.S. hybrid sales last year. While there are murmurings that competition from other hybrids is hurting sales, Toyota spokesperson Bill Kwong disagrees: "The Prius is like the icon for hybrids. For most people there is no second choice." But the icon recently slipped off the list of the nation's 10 fastest-selling vehicles for the first time in over three years, and Toyota hopes to boost U.S. sales by 70 percent in 2007. It may be an uphill battle against revised fuel-economy figures, a reduced federal hybrid credit, lower gas prices, and want-what-I-can't-haveness -- but hey, somebody's gotta do it.

Maybe if they started selling their hybrid minivan

I'm continually amazed that Toyota has a hybrid minivan (the Estima at 40+ mpg - http://www.toyota.co.jp/en/news/06/0612_2.html) on sale in Japan but hasn't chosen to bring it to the US market.  Think of the appeal to kids and soccer moms concerned about the future.  There are only so many folks that will want a Prius-sized vehicle.  Expand the market but opening it up to more vehicle types (and not with weak hybrids that just raise horsepower without improving gas mileage).

hybrid mania

Is this really a green option anyway?
Vehicle mass causes more road damage (4th to 12th power of weight depending on road surface) and tyre wear and when compared with the lighter equally frugal diesel options. The additional road and tyre maintenance may more than compensate for the hybrids lower emissions.
A vehicle that is required by its manufacturer to be recycled through its supplier may also be much greener!
Bring in the fully recyclable all electric car and the photo cell charging station.

Prius still on the rise

As of now many have thought that the Prius was just a fad that would eventually lose its luster. But now that the gas price moves nearly $4.00 per gallon, I wouldn't be surprised if the Prius will once again become a scarcity in showrooms and Toyota will no longer be threatened even a bit with sales competition.
