Eco-friendly Fire

British arms manufacturer producing green weapons

One of the world's biggest arms manufacturers, British Aerospace, is investing heavily in eco-friendly weapons. Soldiers and civilians may now be blown up by a recyclable explosive, hit by a reduced-toxin rocket, or bombed by a fuel-efficient fighter jet. Biodegradable land mines and their victims both turn into compost over time. Quieter warheads reduce noise pollution, less smoky grenades reduce air pollution, and reduced-lead bullets, if left in the environment, "do not cause any additional harm," says Deborah Allen, director of corporate social responsibility at British Aerospace. Meanwhile, British troops will stay safe in their armored vehicles -- hybrid, naturally. "No company, regardless of what they make, can now just make a product, bung it out there, and then forget about it," says Allen. "We all have a duty of care to ensure that from cradle to grave products are being used appropriately and do not do lasting harm."

Oh!, do I weep or do I laugh?!

"Eco-friendly weapons"!  Wow!  Has our civilization reached a breaking point or what!

Chickens deserve our true friendship! So do fish! So do other sentient beings! Let us learn to be kind.

I, too, don't know what to say. I'm all for sustainability but... I found it interesting that he chose to use the phrase "do no lasting harm."

as for the little frogs ...

... good for them!  They should fly first class, too!  With all the champagne they want!  Frogs are our friends!

Snakes too, I guess.  I have no problems with snakes on a plane.  Did anybody really believe that the snakes were not more frightened of the human beings than the other way around?

a challenge for green business

I think "green" weapons shows that as the green message reaches the mainstream, further work is required to bring in the deeper messages of ecology; we can hardly rest on our laurels after a green triumph like this.  I'm not surprised this rolled around -- all too many businesses are posing as green, without understanding the ideas of inter-connectedness and the value of all living things at the core of environmental progress.

My favorite quote from teh arms makers is cited below: "We all have a duty of care to ensure that from cradle to grave products are being used appropriately and do not do lasting harm."  You get a gratuitous "grave" reference, plus the fear of weapons serving their intended function.  Can the Daily Show interview these people, please?

A joke, right?

Blame it on Reagan who named a new missle "The Peacekeeper" (or whoever did).

What's scary is not that such weapons be produced, but that there is a market for them.

Maybe they can be used to kill global warming refugees...

BAE goes big on "green" weapons

This is a joke, right?  "We have a duty ..........do not do lasting harm."  And, remind me - what are weapons for?   This a new high in lows - and kept waiting for the punch line or for someone to say - gotch ya!!!!!
Will these weapons just kill people outright, so that the time frame from "cradle to grave" is reduced to a mili-second, thereby reducing the impact on the environment?  will they be vaporized?  That would reduce the impact even more...........
I'm still sitting here at my desk, shaking my head and wondering if I slipped into another dimension.
Please tell me this is a joke.
