How's That Mars Exploration Going?

News flash: as world warms, weather gets worse

As the globe warms, the risk of more frequent and severe forest fires, droughts, and floods rises. So says, well, the entire scientific community, forever. But a new study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences is being billed as the most comprehensive look yet at the effects of climate change. With data from 52 climate simulations, British researchers looked at a range of scenarios. A global average temperature rise of up to 3.6 degrees is inevitable, they say, and could cause Europe, Asia, Canada, central America, and the Amazon to lose up to 30 percent of forest cover. A rise of 5.4 degrees or more would, um, really suck: it brings the deforestation probability up to 60 percent, and could also cause the world's vegetation to switch from a net absorber of carbon dioxide to a net producer. Probability of ignorance in certain areas remains high under all scenarios. Sigh.

Nothing sexier than an enigneer

except maybe a greased Irishman, or possibly Fat Bastard.

On a more serious note, don't hold your breath. Engineers, although sexy, design what they are told to design. The decision-makers are the problem. The ads for Jeeps starring Daimler/Chrysler's chief, Dieter Zetsche are just terrible. Nothing kisses your boss's ass like putting him in his own car ads. Ford tried that also. I have no faith in our car manufacturers. Their ranks have been permeated from top to bottom by unimaginative yes men. They may have reached a terminal mass of brown nosers.

In the end, it all comes down to biodiversity. Poison Darts--Protecting the biodiversity of our world

Engineers Gone Wild -- SUVs!?!?

So GM, BMW, and Daimler-Chrysler have got the hybrid religion, and are going to stick it to Toyota, huh?  I'm glad they are developing the next-gen technology, but...all three plan to use the tech in SUVs!! Don't they even begin to get it?

I anxiously await tiny, fuel-sipping cars from China - or maybe Europe.  I'd be elbowing my way into line to help Ford or GM's bottom line if they had anything I wanted.
