An African man who has devoted his life to protecting a huge tropical rainforest and two aboriginal Australian women who have fought against a uranium mine are among the winners of the Goldman Environmental Prizes to be awarded today. The prestigious annual prizes honor grass-roots environmentalists from six continents; winners receive $125,000. Other winners this year include a Burmese activist who has documented human rights and environmental abuses; a Newfoundland fisher who has worked to halt overfishing; a Honduran man who has fought against destructive shrimp farming; and a Slovakian hydrologist who successfully opposed a destructive dam.
