Arnie on Blairoids

Blair and Schwarzenegger joining forces to fight climate change

Perhaps finally sensing he's been poodling to the wrong pseudo-manly Republican, U.K. Prime Minister Tony Blair has decided to wag his tail for California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger: The two leaders are planning to create a trans-Atlantic cap-and-trade system for carbon dioxide allowances. The alliance will be announced today at a meeting attended by some 25 major corporate CEOs, who plan to discuss means of moving toward cleaner technologies. The Bush administration would have sent a representative to the gathering, it really wanted to, but -- wouldn't you know it? -- there was a scheduling conflict. If established, the trading system would join Europe's mandatory system, along with a voluntary system created by Northeastern U.S. states, and the Chicago Climate Exchange, a privately run, voluntary national system. No confusion there.

Anything that isolates Bush!

The quotes I've seen from enviros dissing this initiative seem off base. In my book, anything that serves to further isolate Bush on the global warming issue is fantastic. Look at the Bushites scrambling to associate themselves with the announcement after the fact ... claiming to be mid-wives! Will the constituents of Arnold and Tony get everything they want in terms of action on global warming? No. Still, the record says that these two guys are not mere showboaters on the issue.

Lohan's not alone

Looks like Lindsay Lohan's not the only one suffering from "heat exhaustion" this summer.  Nuclear facilities in the American Midwest have also ground to a halt because of the sweltering temperatures. The Cook nuclear power station in Michigan was taken offline on Sunday because in-plant temperatures topped 120 degrees Fahrenheit.  Nuclear reactors in Minnesota met similar problems on Monday.  In Illinois, warming waters from the Mississippi River couldn't effectively cool the Quad Cities reactor so output was cut.  Given there was a near meltdown in Sweden recently, we should just keep the reactors off.  In this case, it's better to fade away than burn out.
