Agencies Fight Over Trust Fund to Protect Groundwater from Nevada Mine
A huge gold-mining project proposed for northern Nevada could pollute groundwater for hundreds, even thousands, of years, according to an environmental impact statement. The feds have asked the Newmont Mining Corp. to establish a trust fund that would take care of any future contamination, but the Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. EPA are clashing over how large the fund should be. BLM says $408,000, while EPA says $33.5 million -- a bit of a discrepancy there. Enviros are calling for an even higher number.
