CAFE Au Lait

Bush Revisions to CAFE Standards a Mixed Bag

The Bush administration has cooked up a plan to overhaul the Corporate Average Fuel Economy program -- but, though enviros have long called CAFE inadequate, they're none too happy with the new proposal. They acknowledge some good points -- it would close loopholes that currently exempt monstrous vehicles like Hummers from all fuel-efficiency standards and that let cars like the PT Cruiser pass as light trucks. But the plan as a whole would likely have the effect of encouraging automakers to produce bigger, heavier, less efficient vehicles -- not exactly a ticket to energy independence or climate stability. Amanda Griscom gets to the bottom of the story in the latest Powers That Be -- only on the Grist Magazine website.
