MTBE-Free or Die

EPA Attempts to Defuse MTBE Issue in New Hampshire

This past week, with all eyes on Democratic presidential candidates in New Hampshire, front-runner John Kerry decrying MTBE contamination in groundwater, and the state in the midst of suing MTBE manufacturers, a cynical Republican president might have moved to defang that controversial environmental issue. President Bush, no cynic, took the high road: He let the EPA do it for him. The agency has accepted New Hampshire's request to be exempted from a federal Clean Air Act program that requires gasoline to contain additives such as MTBE, which makes gas burn more cleanly but also has been found to heavily pollute groundwater. Find out why this move won't do New Hampshirites much good -- and why it might help push Bush's stalled energy bill through Congress. Also check out a Western business group's environmental wish list, and the Bush administration's ongoing attempts to fulfill it, in this week's Muckraker -- only on the Grist Magazine website.
