EPA Attempts to Defuse MTBE Issue in New Hampshire
This past week, with all eyes on Democratic presidential candidates in New Hampshire, front-runner John Kerry decrying MTBE contamination in groundwater, and the state in the midst of suing MTBE manufacturers, a cynical Republican president might have moved to defang that controversial environmental issue. President Bush, no cynic, took the high road: He let the EPA do it for him. The agency has accepted New Hampshire's request to be exempted from a federal Clean Air Act program that requires gasoline to contain additives such as MTBE, which makes gas burn more cleanly but also has been found to heavily pollute groundwater.
