NEW IN GRIST
Virgin forests of the southeastern U.S. are being flushed down the toilet -- literally. Vast stretches of biologically rich forestland on the Cumberland Plateau in the southern Appalachian Mountains are being decimated to produce throwaway paper products -- newsprint, copier paper, glossy magazine pages, and, yes, toilet tissue. A quarter of the world's paper is made from trees in the southeast, though it could easily be made from recycled material instead. This week's Grist diarist, Allen Hershkowitz of the Natural Resources Defense Council, is teaming up with grassroots activists in the southeast to develop a multifaceted strategy to stop this forest destruction. Read all about their plots and plans -- only on the Grist Magazine website. Flush With PrideNRDC Teams up With Grassroots Activists to Protect Appalachian Forests
