Austin Powers

The center of the Earth is 3,959 miles away -- but where is the center of the sustainable Earth? Lately, it seems like it's in Austin, Texas, which hosted the American Wind Energy Association annual conference in May and the American Solar Energy Society national conference in June, as well as the first International Green Building Conference last year. With its booming wind energy market and budding competitiveness in solar power, the oil-well-studded Lone Star State seems to have an improbable opportunity to emerge as a national leader in alternative energy. That's an exciting proposition for Soll Sussman, one of the organizers of the Texas Sustainable Energy Network and this week's Grist diarist. Read about Sussman's efforts to promote renewable energies in Texas and elsewhere, only on the Grist Magazine website.
