Sturgeon General Warning
Once upon a time, Wisconsin sturgeon were poached in massive quantities, packed illicitly into coffins, and shipped to Chicago by box-car, where they were sold for consumption or for their caviar, which can fetch as much as $150 a pound. Today, although most of the world's 25 species of sturgeon are rare or endangered, there are more sturgeon in and around Lake Winnebago than anywhere on the planet. That's thanks in large part to the efforts of the Sturgeon Guard, a volunteer army dedicated to protecting spawning sturgeon from would-be poachers. Journalist Erik Ness goes on scene to watch the spawning season, meet guard members, and report on the unusual success story of Wisconsin's wild sturgeon -- only on the
Grist Magazine website.
