Better, By Design

The idea that growth can be good is anathema to most environmentalists. Yet that's exactly the argument made by William McDonough and Michael Braungart in their new book "Cradle to Cradle." Take a look at nature, they say, and you'll see that growth is not only good, but necessary; that nature's very abundance is what we depend on and celebrate. The key is pursuing the right kind of growth -- and the key to that is better design. The authors argue that companies ought to design products with an eye toward their entire life cycles, and the book itself lives up to those standards by being supremely recyclable. But is it a good read? Get reviewer Hal Clifford's opinion, only on the Grist Magazine website.
